Capture One 5.0 is out

Recommended Posts

There seems to be confusion as to whether Cap 1 owners that started with ver 3.7 LE that came with the camera and took a free upgrade to ver 4.x can now pay for an upgrade to ver 5 (pro or normal).

I have started a support case with Phaseone to clarify this.

I'll be interested to hear the outcome. I'll probably end up buying 5 Pro but I'm not really in the mood for photography related expenditure this month so any upgrade concession would be welcome.

I've read on the Phase One support forums from people who have bought C1 4 Pro this week and been told by Phase that they are shit out of luck. A bit harsh considering it can be argued that C1 5 is the piece of software that C1 4 was meant to be.

Answer from Phaseone:

"Jeff,

You can use your key to purchase an upgrade. Please use this key in the E-Shop to purchase the upgrade to Capture One 5."

I've tried this (buy C1 4 to C1 5 Pro upgrade for €229) and it doesn't work.

I too have been in touch with Phase customer services about this issue and have now had this response:

"You will need to upgrade to Capture One 5 for 69 Euros/ 99 USD. Your

current product key does not have any free uprades"

I and others are not asking for a free upgrade, we know that they ran out when we went from ver3.7 LE (which comes with the M8) to ver4.x.

What we are asking for is a paid upgrade to V5, pro or basic as opposed to paying the full price. When we try that, their site rejects the LE key.

No response yet from Phaseone on this.

The question I asked them was about eligibility for a paid upgrade. However they chose to give the response that I've already posted.

Here is what I asked in my email:

"I am a legitimate user of Capture One 4 (standard) using the license

code that came with my Leica M8. At present i seem unable to use this

license code when trying to purchase an upgrade version.

Can you offer any assistance with this?"

Jaay that is basically the same question I asked them. They said put the LE code in, I did and it did not work. I'm still awaiting a further response on this issue from Phaseone. Hopefully they will sort it.

There is some agro on the Paseone forums on a slightly different issue - if you bought Ver4 then no free upgrades to ver5 were allowed. This applies to those who bought ver4 1 day before ver5 was released.

Its worse than what has been reported. About 30 days ago I used my free M8 C1 software key to obtain version 4 Lite. I upgraded immediately for $299 to the Pro Version 4.8.3 and I have the Pro key for version 4. When I try to use the key to upgrade to version 5 for the $99 upgrade price its rejected.

When I purchased the 4 Pro Upgrade ....they double charged my Amex and it took 14 emails and calls to get it resolved.

I have 3-4 be patient emails .

I guess I will add my tail of woe to this list - not nearly as bad as some of the others. All amounts are in US dollars:

I started out 5 months ago with a free copy of Capture One 4 which came with the purchase of a Leica D-Lux 4 (I also have a copy of C1 that came with my M8.2 but never activated it). After about a month I upgraded from Capture One 4 to the Pro version 4 - cost of the upgrade = $299. Now I am upgrading from Capture One 4 Pro to Capture One 5 Pro - cost of the upgrade = $99. Total out-of-pocket to get to V. 5 Pro = $398. Cost of C1 5 Pro if I had never owned a previous version = $399. My savings as a result of starting with a free copy and being an upgrader = $1!

It is true that I did get to use Capture One 4 Pro for 4 months before upgrading, so there is obviously some value in that. I just thought that it was a bit ironic how close upgrade pricing, starting out with a "free" copy, came to full retail price for a new user.

All of that said it looks like C1 5 has enough new goodies that it is almost a must upgrade.

Roger, have you been able to buy an upgrade to ver5 pro or are you stuck permanently at ver4? I can't believe that.

Roger, clearly you have been 'rumbled.' I managed to do exactly what you have attempted and it worked perfectly and smoothly. Regrettably there must be some glitch in the original processing of your registration that is impeding your progression. Computers 'at play' you can bet. I had a similar experience with my firwall software that never got resolved until I got "real people" involved and re-issued with a totally separate serial number etc. I recommend you establish a solid personal contact somehow for your own peace of mind. Believe me, once you get there, the software is great, despite the company policies and practices.
