Capture One 5.0 is out

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm doing the happy dance here--C1 V5 has a ton of stuff I've wanted for many many years!

The best thing in there I can see so far is the ability to make per-channel white point and black point corrections AND per channel curves corrections.

This is one of the few reasons I trip my files into Photoshop; now I can make the correction at the RAW level. It also means that tough color casts can be easily worked right in C1!

So I'm happy so far... very nice. Oh, and the level of detail on output seems enhanced as well... but I have to dig into that more.

I have been using C1 for the past couple of weeks and while i have watched the video tutorials that phase 1 provides, they are pretty brief and i'm frankly not using the software very effectively (to say the least).

Can anyone recommend any good way to learn the software package fully? If I purchase 5.0, do i get a user's manual, or are there any after market books on 4.0? I haven't seen any.

Any help would be much appreciated. thanks, tony.

I still have a serial number (ver.3.7) from my second M8 I haven't used (not registered yet).

I know it gives you a free upgrade (I can use it with ver.4.x) but does anyone know if I could use it with version 5?

Thank you for your comments.

No, doesn't appear to. I've tried two 3.7.x serial numbers. Both have worked fine with C1 4 but C1 5 explicitly states that the serials are not valid. What's more irritating is that you cannot pay the upgrade price to acquire 5 (even though, with the free upgrade from 3.7 to 4, I consider myself a legitimate owner of 4).

The Phase One servers are having a bit of a meltdown, so I hope no one minds if I post my question here instead of there: the specs say Windows X SP3 - is this a recommendation or an absolute, as I'm running SP2 because I have software that won't run under XP3?

The SP3 statement is referring to the fact that CO 5 was tested under SP3 and will be supported for SP3. I will probably run under SP2 just fine but if you encounter any issues, you might be on your own.

More important is that you have .NET framework 3.5 SP1

No, doesn't appear to. I've tried two 3.7.x serial numbers. Both have worked fine with C1 4 but C1 5 explicitly states that the serials are not valid. What's more irritating is that you cannot pay the upgrade price to acquire 5 (even though, with the free upgrade from 3.7 to 4, I consider myself a legitimate owner of 4).

Thank you, Ian!

I was going to try tomorrow back in Paris. I'm in the countryside now and I don't have the second license number here.

Well, I will buy the new version... even if, as you said, it's irritating we're not eligible for the upgrade from version 4 to 5

You can't get the upgrade price if you got 3.x LE with your M8, even if you then upgraded to 4.0? That is distressing. Can anyone else confirm this?

Their press release on dpreview says:

Existing Capture One 4 PRO customers can upgrade to Capture One 5 PRO for 99 USD and 69 EUR. Existing Capture One 4 customers can upgrade to Capture One 5 PRO for 299 USD and 229 EUR.

The Phase One online store says:

Capture One 5 Pro

Buy EUR 299/ USD 399

Upgrade from Capture One 5 EUR 229/ USD 299 (HUH?)

Upgrade from Capture One 4 PRO EUR 69/ USD 99

There is some confusion here. Let's hope Phase One sorts it out. I hope they are not going to pull a Clinton: "That depends on what you mean precisely by 'existing Capture One 4 Customer'"

HI Peter

I upgraded from my 3.7 license with the M8 to 4 pro . . and I agree, superficially it looks like I must pay €299 for a full version of 5.

I'm trying to get a response from them at the moment, as this sounds a little unlikely.

I'll report back if I have any joy.

Peter, if you try to buy the upgrade you have to enter your serial number to confirm eligibility. Neither of my 3.7 serial numbers allow me to purchase either of the available upgrades (C1 4 to C1 5 or C1 4 to C5 Pro).

I have v.4 Pro and my serial number was accepted for the €69 upgrade to v.5 Pro.

You should be OK.

I did the same, I updated my M8 C1 version to 4 PRO and now may want to upgrade to 5 PRO...please let us know how it turns out.

If I have to pay for a new full version that may make up my mind about switching to LR...though I'm really leaning towards sticking with C1PRO.

I agree with Noah. Lightroom is starting to look more attractive. If I have no upgrade incentive, then I have to look at each program on a more equal footing. Lightroom is more of a standard than C-One, especially if you use other cameras as well as the M8 or M9. The question is, what does each offer me? Since Lightroom is going to be the standard program for the M9, the future seems to be with Lightroom. Unless C-One offers something "must-have" for the M8 that you can't get any other way.

And of course, as a non-professional photographer, I could just stick with C-One v. 4. I can do the things v. 5 Pro offers in my image editor.

There must be an error on the Phase One web site. How can you upgrade from 5 to 5 Pro when the former didn't exist before? I think the press release is correct (that v. 4 users can upgrade to 5 Pro for $299, and the web site info is a mistake. But Phase One seem to be saying that unless you bought v. 4 outright, you don't get any discount. Those who bought it via an added fee in the M8 price need not apply. A one-stop program would be more convenient, but if C-One offers no upgrade incentive for M8 users, it leaves a bad taste. We shall see.

There's an archive on the Phase One site with old releases (under downloads). So download 3.7, download 4.8 and install each in sequence. Then you should be recognized as an upgrade customer. I agree, painful, but it should work.

Also, I noticed that the user manual for release 5.0 is available without login, which means without paying anything, or even putting a 30-day timeout on it.

edit: I see from further discussion, that there are problems going from 3.7 LE to the new 5 Pro version, which is probably what you want to have. I bought a 5 upgrades ticket back in 2004, and very few things before this have been considered upgrades, so I don't bump my head against some of these problems.

The user manuals and 'what's new' have always been free. You can 30-day trial version 5 by entering your login email used with versions 3 and 4. I guess you can also try 5PRO. The manual shows in orange all the things only applicable to PRO. For C1 users with the last 4.8.3. there seems to be virtually nothing of great value vis-à-vis image processing but the session options just look more complicated.

It looks as if it's a Phase One tit-for-tat (disallowing version 4 upgrade FOC) with Leica given that for M9 users they've switched from Phase One to Lightroom.:mad::mad:
