wilfredo Posted October 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2009 Greyhound, Welcome to the forum. Have fun with your new M8 and post some shots on the Photo forums. You will especially like the B&W results. Did you get a UV/IR filter? You will need it for color shooting.
greyhound67 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 28, 2009 Yes , I have a IR filter for the Cron. Thanks
ptarmigan Posted October 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 28, 2009 Hey good luck. Started in June with the M8 and 35 cron ASPH and have been loving it. Just however purchased a 75 crob AA and I'm loving that even more! Takes some getting used to with focusing the 75 though.
ChrisC Posted October 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2009 ... gear will be a M8 , 35 Cron..... One lens, one camera, two feet and two eyes. Fabulous; much better to take visual intelligence for a walk than take a lens collection. Good luck. ............... Chris
canus Posted October 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 28, 2009 Congrats! As for myself, I'm waiting for my M8. I have a pending deal with someone, where we will make a trade for my Digilux 3 and some R lenses and some cash, however, I had to send my kit lens to the store where I bought my camera which was under the stores warranty. That was 8 or 9 weeks ago, of which they promised me would take 3 weeks. It turns out they sent it the Ontario leica dealer, which, turns out they sent it to the New York warehouse. I have absolutely no word on how much longer it will take. I just got off the phone with my rep at the store where I bought my camera, and he told me, that's the thing with Leica, you just don't know how long it will take to fix. I just hope that the person I have this pending deal with doesn't get impatient and sells his M8 elsewhere.
DigiPro Posted October 28, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Congrats, Greyhound! Like you, I just purchased an M8 and same lens about a week ago. I debated between the M8, M8.2 and M9 and decided on the M8 (and saved a few dollars in the end). Wouldn't you know it, yesterday my local dealer in Orlando calls to tell me they had a new M9 in stock and asked if I wanted it! Argh! Well, at least it was a black M9 and I like silver, so that helped to ease the pain And I did appreciate the call... they were very patient with me as I tried to decide what my first Leica M lens would be. Anyway, I'm having fun taking pictures of just about any and everything. Will post a few as soon as I get up the nerve. Enjoy your camera! wparsonsgisnet Posted October 28, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 28, 2009 Congratulations! I just got my M9, but have a pair of M8's and find them just as enjoyable. Looking forward to your posts.
wda Posted October 28, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 28, 2009 Greyhound, welcome! Your combination of M8 and 35mm Summicron will cover many many situations. I strongly recommend that you avoid the temptation to add more lenses until you have truly mastered the kit you already own. Gradually you will discover which situations require a different focal length. But take your time. Human legs often come to rescue a situation if you can or are prepared to seek the optimum shooting position. Enjoy your M8.
greyhound67 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted October 28, 2009 Thanks for the welcome . No problem on the avoiding adding to the lens collection , One camera, One Lens , One filter , One SD card , One battery , ...........Geez I'm stating to sound like Bono on a old U2 sound. "One" I now need to post at least one picture. Thanks
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 29, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 29, 2009 Thanks for the welcome . greyhound67 Posted October 29, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 29, 2009 Thanks for the tip!! I did not know that . I started with the extra battery (was going to send back), Trying to stay as simple as possible, I bought a Hoodman SD card , I heard they use less battery power . I guess I will have to have one two in the mix. Thanks again.
Guest mc_k Posted October 29, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 29, 2009 Nice to have a second SD card and second battery for diagnostic purposes...swapping out the card or battery can frequently cure an M8 that is acting up.
shootinglulu Posted October 29, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 29, 2009 Having only one battery would really limit my use of the camera.
sfokevin Posted October 29, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 29, 2009 And that 35 Cron will get lonely in your camera bag all by itself
vdb Posted October 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 29, 2009 Welcome. I recently aquired an M9 but plan on keeping and using my M8. Your gonna love it. Which 35 cron? I have the v. IV, pre-asph and love it on the M8...though the asph version is stupendous. Please post images in the photo section.

greyhound67 Posted October 30, 2009 Author Share #18 Posted October 30, 2009 I had a little spare time to shoot a little today. Level one question sorry , I resolved to only shoot raw so I set the compression to DNG only. When I down loaded to the apple to convert ( Capture one) never have used by the way , my apple iphoto down loaded the pics from the SD card reader from the SD card without conversion. Am I just confused with raw and DNG with the M8 ? No conversion required. Am I missing something ?? I researched Raw vs DNG before looking like I just ate a bowl of stupid but I found some are converting raw files into DNG before they even start processing . I have Aperture as my edit program. I hope this makes sense. I guess what I am asking is to get the best file do I just set compression to DNG . If my Apple opens it w/o a need for conversion thats great?? vdb Posted October 30, 2009 Share #19 Posted October 30, 2009 Correct. Capture in DNG to maximize file info. Aperture recognizes it without any special conversion.
