Earlier Summilux 50 0.7m focus version hard to find?

I'm looking to buy the second version Summilux 50 (the version that focusses to 0,7m instead of 1m), but I can't see these available at any of the normal online stores I check.

Are these rare and expensive, or have I simply got confused about the lens, and possibly mixed it up with the ASPH version?

Many thanks for help.

Ah thanks Luigi! I didn't know Sherry Krauter also sold cameras and lenses, as well as fixing them.

This is exactly the problem I have - very often the version is omitted altogether, and the close-focus has almost always to be implied from the product images - which often are not good - especially as I'm no expert on these matters.

I can really only buy the close-focus version if it's 'affordable' - I've accumulated a lot of 50s now, and I don't have any excuses left for needing another 2 or 3000 dollar lens. So maybe I'll have to settle for the earlier 1m model?

The information you can get about the change to the design with closest focussing of 0.70m is not very precise. All I can find is that the last design of the pre-asph. Summilux with the built-in telescopic lens hood and the closer focussing was introduced in 1995, though the data for my own example, which is the last version, tell me that it is from 1994.

If you look for serial numbers higher than 3661xxx you can be sure that you get the one you are looking for.

Ok, this means that Sherry Krauter's item is not a 0,7, as I suspected.. s/n is well under 3.000.000; btw the way, I think this last Summilux was announced at Photokina 1994, so some items, but not so many, can indeed be from that year.

Well, in Italy there are indeed some good dealers... :): and two of them have one "0,7 m" for sale, at the moment :

One is at Foto Prisma - Bologna (www.fotoprisma.it) , but is a Titan item... special taste that someone can appreciate:

The other is in Milano - New Old Camera (www.newoldcamera.it), a black item :

Both are serious dealers, I bought more than once from both of them.

The earlier 1m version is a great lens. I tested my 2nd version 50mm 1.4 recently and am very happy with the results.

Thanks all of you for the help. I'm torn because the 1m focussing version does seem like a great lens, and the prices seem rather lower too. If I'm gonna have any hope of justifying a film body in the next couple of months then I think I may just have to go with the v2 - and that image shows what a wonderful lens it can be!

Thanks again everyone for your guidance and help - the lens arrived yesterday (from the excellent Schouten Cameras in Holland), and it's a beauty. The only significant problems now are the rather radical front-focus (which should be quite an easy fix here in Stockholm), and the tricky problem of finding a E43 cap (which is turning-out harder than I thought).

At least I finally got around to ordering one of my two free filters from Leica - and just like the Nocti, this lens really needs it!

...and the hood too... ;) this version has the fine combination hood mounted reversed with cap on it... compact and very stable fitting. Compliments for your acquisition !

You are at least lucky because the E43 UV/IR filter is in chrome only

You could buy a E43 cap new from Leica if you want, as the LHSA version of the current Summilux 1.4/50 asph. had E43 caps, chrome or black. I am sure they are available as a spare part.

What about the : "Unfortunately 4 white spots are visibel on the rear element". as described by

Schouten Cameras.

Thanks for this excellent tip! I've been to both the local Leica dealers who told me E43 was only a collector's item! I'll get straight onto it!

I was very glad to see this - but less glad to hear that the filters are currently out-of-stock. With luck they'll be back at the beginning of December.

I was worried about those, and discussed them with Marco Schouten on the phone. When the lens arrived I couldn't see them at first, but close examination under a very bright light shows four tiny pin-pricks, spread in a square formation almost at the periphery of the back element. I don't think they're fungus, which was the only thing that worried me. They are testimony to the honesty of Marco - no ebay seller would have mentioned them, I'm sure.

Congratulations ! Looks great.:)

Thanks to all! Sorry I took so long to reply, my daughter is keeping me busy these days!

...I second that, plasticman - Marco is, quite simply, scrupulous to a fault. Top egg, any given day. :)
