Heliar 50's

This thread from a short while ago refers, but it got sidetracked thanks to Kenneth poo-pooing non-Leica lenses.

Puts' brief review of the 3.5 can be found here at the bottom of the page, and some samples can be found here.

I'm torn between the Heliar 50/2 (because it's different) and the Elmar-M 50/2.8 (because it's just so good)!

They look like very nice lenses and probably ideal for screw mounts but I've owned a 60s Elmar M 50/2.8 and a last version 50/2.8 and they are probably the best value for money Leica lens I have owned. Haven't shot them using film (yet ;-) but I'd find it hard to justify a CV at that price when the s/h prices for the Elmars are often less.

The 3.5 and also the 2 did I believe come attached to an anniversary edition of a Bessa. I think the lenses came in M bayonet mount format and in black as well as chrome.

I'm not sure about separate availability but that seems to be implied on Camerquest's site, although they are now discontinued.

The upcoming series all seem to be LTM mount.

As far as Elmar prices go, the latest Elmar-M's - which seem to be not very thick on the ground - seem to be around £500 & upward on that auction site.

I"m interested in their use on M8 or possibly (later) M9, rather than on film.

Brian, after my 28/2.8 probably my most used lens. In fact, I would be a little put off getting an M9 just because the short tele effect for portrait work when using a 50/2.8 on an M8 is just so gorgeous. One of my photo albums in my profile is entirely composed of 50/2.8 pictures.

I've found it very interesting that at the end of the day, my most used Leica lenses are in fact the cheapest.

I have the Heliar f2. It's a unique lens given it's number of elements and speed. It is quite sharp and collapses but not too much. There is vignetting for the first couple of stops but has a nice color rendition. I don't shoot too often with it, but it's nice when i want something small and want to go longer than 35mm.

As far as I recall, the 3.5/50 was available in chrome only and with screw mount. The 2.0/50 was available in black and chrome, and were supplied with an M-mount. I had my 2.0/50 Milich modified for the M8. The 3,5/50 was supplied with the Heliar 101 set, but the 2.0/50 was offered separately also.

These are great lenses, and in particular the 3.5/50 is a gem and it is a commendable that Voigtlander has relaunched the lens.
