Leica Newbie Blown Away by Image Quality

I definitely agree that the confining spaces of Europe can be a great reason to carry the Leica. I am also seriously thinking about selling all of my canon gear. I don't want to be too hasty and will give it a few months to ruminate. I have big trip to Africa in December and definitely want the big lenses for Safari. Can one really do all the lanscape and nature work with a Leica?

"All" would be an exaggeration w.r.t. landscape, but some people do that, yes. Unless you use long lenses a lot, I don't see why not. Animal photography is harder, so you might want to keep two kits, each tuned for its own uses, i.e. Canon w/ long lenses, M9 w/ short and normal lenses, up to 90mm or 135mm.

Thanks for the input!

impressive indeed. could you also show the shots straight out of the camera. I'd like to have an idea of how much processing is required.

Herbert,

Here are the unprocessed photos.

I'm going green with envy reading all these comments on the M9 - and also wondering how I can get my hands on one without going bankrupt. The reason I'm joining in here is this. I have a M7 with a variety of second hand lens - CV 21/4, CV 35/1,4, 50/2 Summicron-M, 90/2.8 Tele Elmarit M and 135/4 Tele Elmar. My question is whether I can use these lens on a M9 or have to remortgage the house to buy some of these newer lenses. I can sell the M7 and my Nikon D300 and a couple of Nikon DX lenses which would leave me with my beloved III (F) but I would have to stick to these lenses for the moment - Any suggestions (like sure fire Lottery winning numbers)??

From what I know you can use ALL your lenses on the M9 without a problem. The quality of the older ones might not reach the current lenses, but you need an expert to detect the differences.

I also have a few of the older lenses but invested in a coded 28 mm- SUMMICRON recently to check on the M9 - when it hopefully arrives ... Got the coded lens, because I never dared to think LEICA would offer a manual system for lenssettings in a digital M.

Now they did, very fine for the old stock.

And it might be even greater fun to mount the oldies. Since coding is not a problem anymore just grab the old lenses and have fun.

Best

Well, Nobody has mentioned Visoflex as of yet.... It's heavy, a bit awkward, but if it can afford to rent that extra camel to carry the extra weight, it could supplement the excellent main leica lenses. I have the bellows for Macro, and lenses up to 560mm for telephoto.... It very old school to the point of surreal but it works.... and it is Leica Glass...
