pipeclayed Posted October 20, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have just got my new M6TTL - very excited! But I have a couple of questions (they seem ridiculous... sorry!) 1. I have loaded (properly I hope) a new film. If the rewind knob is turning every time I move the film forward, does that mean I have definitely loaded it properly? Or could it be turning even without having loaded the film correctly? 2. The meter. Sometimes the arrows light up perfectly, but other times there is nothing at all to indicate the correct exposure. I am hoping this is just the battery. Although it seems strange that it should work sometimes and not others... Does anyone know where I can get a suitable replacement battery in London? Will appreciate any replies at all. Thanks

Joachim123 Posted October 20, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2009 I envy you. I have bought a 90mm 2.8 lens and a motor winder M. I am now looking for a used M6. However, here is a link where you can get an M6 users manual without cost to you. This should answer some of your questions. Leica M6, Leica M6 TTL instruction manual, user manual, PDF manual, free manuals
pipeclayed Posted October 21, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 21, 2009 Thanks. But don't envy me too much... I have done some reading and the flickering / non-appearing metering lights seem to be very bad news...
rolfe_tessem Posted October 21, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 21, 2009 1. Yes, if the rewind knob is turning, you have loaded the camera correctly. 2. You have to partially depress the shutter release to activate the meter.

Hi, thanks - but I am pretty certain there is a problem with the meter - it barely comes on now and when it does it only flickers for a split second. I have contacted the eBay seller... fingers crossed.
think Posted October 21, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 21, 2009 Did you replace the battery with either 1/3N or the 2 smaller cells together? I find the 1/3N to last longer on the whole. You can often pick up a 6 pk of them pretty cheap on the big auction site.
rleffingwell Posted October 21, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Pipeclayed, I have a couple of TTL bodies and I agree with those who have written before that you change batteries. Mine blink and fade when the batteries are fading as well. Often eBay sellers and other used equipment vendors do not supply brand new batteries to save themselves the expense. Try new ones and enjoy your camera!

Try new ones and enjoy your camera! Ok, I will try it. Out of interest, when you say the batteries fade, could you describe it exactly? Mine will blink on very briefly and then disappear totally (or just not come on at all). I called CRR in Luton and described it and it sounds like a new circuit board might be needed. dpattinson Posted October 21, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 21, 2009 One thing to be careful about. Make sure you use the off switch before you stow the camera in a bag or put a neoprene case on it. If you don't switch the camera off, the pressure from the bag or the neoprene case will activate the meter and drain your batteries in hours.

pipeclayed Posted October 21, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 21, 2009 Yeah- sorry. I must have made an account and forgotten about it. For some reason it logged me in on that when I got to work this morning. Either way, I am the same person and there are no underhand reasons for having two accounts - just an accident. Would appreciate any more info about this problem. If someone could describe exactly what happens when the M6 battery dies that would be great. Is it normal for the arrows to come on for just a moment (or not at all) when the battery is going?
earleygallery Posted October 21, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 21, 2009 Why not just go and buy a couple of SR44 batteries and see if that fixes the problem, it will confirm it one way or another. Sounds reasonable that an expired battery would behave that way.

Sounds reasonable that an expired battery would behave that way. I'm planning on finding something during my lunch break. I dunno - I guess I am just upset having spent so much on it that it doesn't work and am looking to see if others have had a similar experience with their meter. You're right though - will just get some batteries and see what happens...
dpattinson Posted October 21, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 21, 2009 It's been a while - but I think I recall the 'battery low' behaviour being as you describe. I think new batteries will fix the problem.
earleygallery Posted October 21, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 21, 2009 If you haven't already done so do read the manual. When you fit the new batteries make sure the camera is 'on' and wound on to enable you to activate the meter. Let us know the outcome.

Have read the manual cover to cover (twice) while waiting for the camera to arrive. Will keep you posted! Thanks for all the help.
kivis Posted October 21, 2009 Share #18 Posted October 21, 2009 I had the same problem about 2 days after I bought my M7. Freaked me out. New batteries took care of it. Keep a few with you.
mdozier Posted October 21, 2009 Share #19 Posted October 21, 2009 My M6 circuit board failed shortly after I got the camera. The red LED arrows were strong but sporadic, frequently not coming on until they finally failed to illuminate at all. When the battery's low it does fade and go out as you describe. Hopefully that's all that's wrong. I sent the camera to DAG and Don fixed it at a very reasonable cost and I've since not had a lick of trouble. I know you will enjoy it once this is resolved. Good luck, Matt
