rick123 Posted November 26, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 26, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, I currently have an Apple MacBook Pro (6 months old with the older Intel chip) & the Leica D-Lux 2. As much as I love using both with iPhoto, my Apple does not recognize RAW images. In addition, I am seriously considering purchasing the M8. Any helpful ideas to allow me to process RAW images with both cameras would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Rick
Advertisement Posted November 26, 2006 Posted November 26, 2006 Hi rick123, Take a look here How Do You Read RAW images from a D-Lux 2 & M8 Using an Apple MacBook Pro?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ceflynn Posted November 26, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 26, 2006 The Leica M8 comes with a lite version of a RAW converter called Capture One, from Phase One in Denmark. It it often referred to as C1 online. Whether you should be able to import RAW files with iPhoto depends on what version you have. Version 6.0 or later should import them: iPhoto 6.0 Help: Working with photos taken in RAW format Whether the program can convert RAW files from your D-Lux 2 is another question. There should be a list of supported cameras. Try searching at Apple - Support for: iPhoto raw
tashley Posted November 26, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 26, 2006 Apple adds support for these things slowly but I did hear that the M8 is to be added too. Not sure about the D-Lux 2. But all this means is that Aperture and iPhoto won't see the files unless the camera is supported. If you install Photoshop with ACR 3.6 update, you can process M8 files to your heart's content. Or you could install Lightroom Beta, for free, but it's not great on the M8 because it has no specific profiles. Given some of the IR issues the M8 has you're best at the moment looking at Jame Roberts adn Guy Mancuso's threads here and getting up to date on which M8 specific profiles will give you the best results. To use these you'll need either a good understanding of Photoshop or simply use the bundled version of Capture One LE which comes with the M8, install Jamie's profiles and learn how to select them. Hope that helps Tim

Dominic Morris Posted December 3, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 3, 2006 I have no problems with either iPhoto or Aperture on my Intel IMac reading DNG files converted from other RAW formats by ACR. Since the M8 will be using DNG as its native RAW format I am not anticipating any problems along this line. I hope to verify soon when my M8 is finally delivered. sagarwal Posted December 3, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 3, 2006 Since the M8 will be using DNG as its native RAW format I am not anticipating any problems along this line. Actually, I was looking up Apple's Aperture webpage a few days ago and came across this small print regarding Aperture's (current) support for DNG: 1. DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter, with the "Convert to Linear Image" option turned off, and created from RAW formats that are otherwise already supported by Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later. Leica M8 is not in "the list of RAW formats that are otherwise already supported by...". Neither is the D-lux 2. However, the Digilux 2 is. I don't doubt that a future update to Aperture will support M8's DNG files too, but it's not there yet. I remember reading about some other member on this forum having problems with Aperture not being able to read M8's DNG files.
innerimager Posted December 3, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I highly recommend Raw Developer, a Mac only program. Elegant and excellent!....Peter
chrism Posted December 3, 2006 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2006 Aperture and iPhoto, which rely on the OS for the recognition of raw file types, do not currently recognise M8 DNGs, no matter which permutation of options you use in converting them from an M8 DNG to an Adobe DNG. This is, I think, because the camera that made the file has to be listed as supported. A MBP can currently access M8 DNGs with C1LE (free with your M8), C1Pro, PS CS/CS2/Elements using ACR, Lightroom, LightZone, or Raw Developer.
