sjinouck Posted October 16, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 16, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, everybody! this week i stumbled on what seems like a leica III for a very reasonable price.. serial number is as follows: 170852.. it is a very old one, as i can see for now, and the person who wants to sell it, said to me, that everything still works very fine.. it has a strange color though, it seems like it is some kind of goldcolor, and around it is some sort of croc-leather.. does anyone have any idea what model this one is?? and if there are special things to be carefull about... it seems that there is a 5cm f/3,5 lens on it.. thanks in advance for the help! grtz, Alex! Advertisement Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Hi sjinouck, Take a look here leica III?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted October 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 16, 2009 Difficult to say, without some pics... the finish you describe ("gold" + special leather) sounds like the finishing of the famous Leica Luxus - which was a model I (Elmar 5 cm fixed) with gold plating and lizard skin cover... a well known and valued collectible which originated a lot of copies / replicas / tentative fakes etc.... Surely, a number of Leica III (a very common model, well over 100.000 made) have been treated for a "gold version", which adds no value to them, being anyway a non-original modification. If the camera you look at is such... I don't see the reason to buy it... as a collectror's item, it has no specific value, as a user... it's strange (and maybe it was cosmetically modified for it was very worn).Better to find a honest old standard LTM...... as for using, IIIc and moreover IIIf are to be preferred. sjinouck Posted October 16, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 16, 2009 thx for your reply! i cannot add pictures, i cannot copy it from the website where it is for sale..the man who wants to sell it, said that he inhereted it from his father, and that it is still in working order.. i am a little bit afraid, that it is too old, or too much worn out.. maybe it is indeed better, for looking around for a more modern copy, as my intention is to use it on a daily basis.. i do not know if it is possible with this old one what is now for sale.. thank you very much for your help!! grtz, Alex! therbert Posted October 16, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 16, 2009 It's either an extraordinarily rare Luxus - in which case it's worth a small fortune - or it's a fake, in which case it's worth very, very little - maybe $100.
sjinouck Posted October 16, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 16, 2009 thx! i looked on internet how real luxus versions looked, and this one doesn't look the same, so i believe that it is a fake, i'll keep my hands off it.. thank you all for your kind help! grtz, alex! jerzy Posted October 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 24, 2009 that's good Alex. For sure this was Russian fake. They are usually made from FED or Zorki (Leica II copy) but sellers sometime advertise them as Leica III. It's brass and sometime covering may be either snake wooden or snake leather. To be bought on e-Bay for cca 100 USD jerzy
