Good morning,

today I recieved the M9 along with a couple of Leica lenses.

Because I would have loved to see more pictures taken with the M9 prior to buying the M9, I now would like to share some pictures with you, that I made (or will make in future) to explore the potential and quality of the Leica M9 in combination with different original Leica lenses.

The photos are for demonstration purposes only, sometimes only in order to adress a special questions as the infrared sensibility, for example. That means, that the photos don't have to be perfect or very good photos per se.

(About me: after having been using Nikon for more than 20 years now, finally - with the appearance of the first FF digital Leica M, the M9 - time has come, where I really did it: buying a Leica M along with some Leica lenses. This is the first time for me using a Leica M.)

I would like to start with the Leica Summilux 50 f/1.4, because today it is the first day, and this lens I was mostly interested in.

I wanted to get an idea about:

red tones, infrared sensibility, low light capability of this pair, the skin tones, bokeh, DOF and automatic white balance.

All photos shot as DNG with ISO 160, Auto WB, handhold, no EV correction.

NB: light within the shop: halogen, mostly 1/15 and 1/20 sec. up to 1/125 (socks).

My impression is: all colors are captured as I think to have seen them in reality: in the shop, vegetable under an umbrella, children under the tree.

All photos imported to Lightroom 2.5, exported to JPEG 1200, 240dpi, sRGB using the DNG Camera Profile for Lightroom and Adobe Capture Raw from Chromasoft, and apart from being croped in some cases, left untouched.

My I ask you, not to download or post the photos outside this forum, please.

I suspect you are pleased with your purchase - given the lovely portraits above you should be! Shall we see the other lens in action tomorrow?

I will keep taking pictures with the M9 and sharing those, which might be of interest.

I will also try to compare similar photos taken with Nikon D700 and Leica M9.

I can see the beginning of a love affair! And you really seem to have a great eye for focus too, though clearly at web sizes one cannot truly judge. They shot of the boy with the sweeties where his spectacle frames and a few of the sweets are in the plane of focus is a great demo shot of how DOF and bokeh work on this lens. I have to say that since the first day I spent with the 50 lux I thought it was the best lens I had ever used - and I still do.

Welcome!

Thanks very much, Tim

I feel, that with the M9 I luckily fell back into a time, where I concentrated on taking a photo. I appreciate that very much after more than 2 decades upgrading in Nikon.

Taking a photo becomes finally much more fun again.

Because with the M9 I focus on basics again and it is a lot more convenient carrying it with me and it is much more tolerated if not really discrete. The M9 is a real vouyeur.

Nice photos! Please keep posting more photos.

I would love to hear your opinion comparing M9 to D700.

For $10,000 they really should look as nice as they do.

What is impressive is the pics with dominent colors such as the red truck and pink boxes do go wonky with auto white bal.

A few years back I did test pics with an M8 and D200 Nikon. I hope you can do the same with the M9 and D700. I am sitting on many Leica lenses trying to decide. The M8pics were clearly better, same time and place. Just the cost put me off.
