wetterzentrale Posted October 14, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I purchased a used APO summicron 2,0 / 90 ASPH for my M8 and have some focussing problems. While close distance is fine , objects in the distance are not. By sticking to what the meter is showing me the picture is not sharp, but if I use infinite and ignore the meter , pictures are sharp . thats confusing . what do i need to send to CS, the lens or the camera ? other lenses are fine in te distance ... Thanks for your advice !

fefe Posted October 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2009 Is your camera focusing ok with other lenses ? Try focusing on a very far object (the moon), are the rangefinder and the infinity on the lense in agrement ? It might be the lens or the rangefinder that are out of calibration or just focusing error as the rangefinder accuracy decreases with distance (but usually depth of field compensates for it). However I never had any problems with my 85 f/2 at long distances.
Guest mc_k Posted October 15, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 15, 2009 I agree with all of last posting. If you end up sending both in, have lens and camera both calibrated to the standard (not just camera adjusted to lens). Unfortunately, even if you have two cameras and two lenses you cannot tell which items are calibrated to the standard.
khiromu Posted October 15, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 15, 2009 I would try cheapo 1.25x magnifier from ebay, if infinity focus is okay as fefe mentioned.
carstenw Posted October 15, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 15, 2009 The 90AA is very touchy with respect to distance focusing, so it could easily be that the camera is off, but your other lenses aren't strongly enough affected to see the problem. My feeling is that the camera is off (I had the same problem when I bought my 90AA but didn't realize), but there is of course a small chance that it is the lens. Adjusting the rangefinder wheel which touches the lens is quite easy, and before sending the camera away you might try this. You need a 2mm hex key and just make tiny adjustments, check if it is getting better or worse, and repeat. If that doesn't cure it, the next adjustment is a lot more tricky, and just sending the stuff to Leica is probably better.

Thanks for your advice ! Hi Wetter.. I took many photos with this wonderful lens and I had no problem of sharpness or focusing But I bought a magnifier for the focusing otherwise it is difficult to focus without it Here are some photos taken in that way : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/nature-wildlife/84767-last-tulip-summicron-90mm.html Regards

Doc Henry Posted October 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 18, 2009 Wetter, I sent you a MP since two days . Have you received it ?
wetterzentrale Posted October 25, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted October 25, 2009 Thank you all (particularly Doc Henry) . My Magnifier arrived yesterday and I am looking forward to use it first time outdoor today. BTW : Further tests with the 2 / 90 AA give me confidence that it was me not focusing correctly rather than the camera / lens doing a bad job. What a relief ! lct Posted October 25, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 25, 2009 At full aperture, lenses like 75/1.4 or 90/2 are beyond the accuracy range of the M8 rangefinder. For a FF circle of confusion of 0.030mm (0.0226mm for the M8), the requested base length of the M8 rangefinder is 53.87mm where its effective one is only 47.09mm. Results are even worst with smaller CoC values of course. For good hit rates, better use a magnifier or buy an M9 anyway.
biglouis Posted October 26, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 26, 2009 It is a difficult lens to focus on the M8. I had one and in the end gave up, sold it and got myself a Macro Elmar 90/4. Part of the problem is that it is a very heavy lens and below 1/125 my problem was camera shake. By contrast I can hold the 90/4 at 1/45 and still get a sharp shot. Weight might be your problem unless you have strong wrists. LouisB
