SD Card Sizes on M8 and or M8.2

Can't seem to get info on the card size allowed on the M8 or M8.2 with the latest Firmware.

I know 2 Gigs was the original standard. What is the current standard?

Hi,

 

If you are using the latest firmware (2.004 at the time of writing.) you can use any SD or SDHC card currently available. I'd advise that you keep a 2GB or smaller SD (Not SDHC) card available for any firmware updates though.

 

Note: If you use a card larger than 8GB, then the frame counter will read 999 until you have used enough of the card to bring the number of remaining photographs below this level. I personally don't ever use a card larger than 8GB, so it's not a problem.

I still think there is a compelling case for standardizing on 2gb cards. Each one stores nearly 200 raw images, more than enough for my average sessions.

 

When on tour it is safer to backup and keep the used cards safe until they are finally downloaded onto my computer. Of course, if you are a full-time professional, there could be a case for bigger cards. But even for my occasional assignments I like to keep one card per job or location. SD cards are small enough to store plenty when on the move before they become a burden. The risk with higher capacity cards lies in the number of images one could potentially lose in an 'incident'. To me it is not worth the risk.

I do suscribe to 2 GB SD cards, 200 Raws or 135 Raws+jpegs, in the later case around 3 and half films equivalent.

 

Four to six such cards is enough to cope with all situations.

 

Even with 2.004 better to stay away from SDHC. Safer.

Depends on what I am shooting. If it's just suff for me I'd usually take a couple of 8gb cards but I also use 4gb and 2gb cards for more serious stuff where I need to guarantee the shot. I don't mind changing cards regularly. Do the same with my Nikon gear too.

I do not see any issue with my 8gb SanDisk Extreme 30mb/sec SDHC card.

This card lives inside my M8 since the last Firmware update and it works perfectly. The M8 is not famous for it it's processing speed so the fastest SD card helps out slightly.

 

You can use that or any professional Lexar safely.

Bear in mind that many older readers don't work with SDHC - but newer ones aren't expensive

I have found that lot of the photo print machines are not even compatible with the SDHC (>2G) cards..

I routinely use 16GB Sandisk Ultra II. When I buy new cards, I'll get 32GB cards. I like shooting all day without having to change cards, particularly in dusty environments. Remember, this isn't like a roll of film. You don't have to fill it before you can download.

 

Also when you switch to the M9, and store full res images with no compression, you'll need bigger cards than 2GB. So, if your going to invest in cards, buy big for further growth.

Me too! No issues and I shoot until they are full so that for a period I have files on both computer and SDHC card - until fully backed up and the card is quite full. I used to subscribe to the 'many smaller cards' idea but in reality larger capacity cards work fine for me.

Well, depends on when you plan to switch. SD card memory comes down in price so much...that if you buy the newest biggest size and you don't need it, you are wasting cash. 4gb cards are $10 now!
