wparsonsgisnet Posted November 16, 2008 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently got an Epson 1400 and the Cone K6 CIS as a dedicated b/w printer. This is a pic of my granddaughter taken this summer. The colors are nice (not here, of course) but I wanted to make a b/w of it. I feel pretty good about the capture as she was moving. 4-year-old's move around a lot. In CS3 I tried some of the stuff in the Beardworth, Adv B and W book, recommended to me here. This has had the yellow cranked up to make the background go pale; then brightness, contract, and clarity added; and finally extra sharpening: amount 90, radius 1.5, detail left at 25. I am printing it in 8x10 and 13x19. I would like comments and suggestions please. M8, 35 'lux-a, iso 160. Many thanks, Welcome, dear visitor! cmarbach Posted November 17, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 17, 2008 I use Alien Skin for my B&W stuff. I like using its filters that give you the B&W look that real film did. You can choose, Plus-X, Tri-X etc. I also like to have some grain in my B&W. I didn't see any grain in your picture, which I liked a lot.

stuny Posted November 17, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 17, 2008 Bill- Adorable child, beautiful crop, moment, light (especially the rimming), soft ly detailed contrast and focus, and tonal range.
Shootist Posted November 17, 2008 Share #5 Posted November 17, 2008 Bill I'm really liking NIK's Silver Efex Pro for B&W convertion. It's not the cheapest but it seems to work for me. I did try Alien Skin and like that also until I tried the NIK software. Nice shot and I don't think anything needs to be done with it. Adding any grain during the convertion IMHO would detract from the shot.
antistatic Posted November 17, 2008 Share #6 Posted November 17, 2008 Nice stuff Bill. I use Silver Fx Pro as I find the U point feature useful for selective dodging and burning.

Fokalfissur Posted November 17, 2008 Share #9 Posted November 17, 2008 Beautiful shot. Maybe I would blur the cheek a little bit. I think the shot is about the profile line and (of cause) the eye. The sharp focus on the cheek distracts my view from the essental parts and the pores are not the most beautiful aspect of the skin.
roguewave Posted November 17, 2008 Share #10 Posted November 17, 2008 Looksto me like you've got it just the way you want it. I can't imagine what suggestions anyone could make to improve it. Bill I agree with Brent. I s this the digital jpeg from raw or the print? If it's not the print, would think of scanning the print for us to compare. I would find it educational. Lovely child and work. Great atmosphere and lovely tones.

Ben, I don't have a working scanner at the moment, but could take a pic of the pic. Woes it do any good for me to say that the screen image looks very much like the print (even in this quality-challenged jpg)?
