Bouncing the SF-24D - My Solution

For some time I've been working an a way to bounce the output of my SF-24D. It is my preferred flash for my M9. After a lot of experiments the setup in the photo is what I have settled on.

 

It consists of a Joe Demb prototype lightweight flash bracket coupled with one of his small Flip-It diffusers with a mirror attached. With the mirror flipped up I get a ceiling bounce directly overhead with horizontal shots. With the mirror flipped down I get a ceiling bounce directly overhead with vertical shots. By tilting the bracket flash mount and/or loosening and re-positioning the cord's hot shoe I can send the output anywhere I am likely to want it.

 

This combination is much lighter and better balanced than when using the SF-58. Works for me.

Looks like this is the most workable solution. If I may speak for those of us with the SF-24D you're efforts are appreciated. I've used the Leicagoodies diffuser for the longest time but keep a Metz 54 MZ3 on hand for serious work, all along wishing the little Leica flash would do just a little more. My only question is how did you shorten the SC-28? I've used one of those with a pocket tripod for off camera (clumsy but works well). Once again thanks for your efforts.

You are very welcome. I bought the SC-28 used and it was already shortened. I don't know how it came to be that way, but I suspect it was done by Paramount Cords It looks like their work.

I like your solution to expand SF24D usefullness.

 

I have the SF58, too heavy, bulky and mounting on my M240 hotshoe becomes a joke as the whole unit becomes so unatable due to the bulk of weight above the camera.

 

Thanks for sharing your ideas and solution! I had similar idea to utilise SF24D but went the other route to use off camera wirelessly on manual flash.

 

So for utilizing TTL off hotshoe, is the SC-17 or SC-28 more appropriate to handle Leica M system?

If you will be freehanding the flash either will work fine. The following pertains to using the flash mounted on a bracket. In that case I believe the SC-17 is the better choice. It fits the Leica flash foot a bit tighter and will minimize any shift of position of the foot which causes loss of communication with the flash. There are two versions of the SC-17. The earlier version lacks the hole for the flash foot locking pin while the later one has it. That is the one to get.

I have finally gotten hold of the SCA adapter kit for additional hotshoe attachment onto M240 via the multifunction handgrip such that I could also employ the EVF.

I lookforward to extend my SF58 from there via your recommendation on SC-17 which hopefully allows me to freely move my flash firing point away from my camera perhaps via a 1m handle bar (found used to perform self portrait by point n shoot digital cameras).
