Luke_Miller Posted March 19, 2013 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Adding a Novoflex Ball 19P to support the SF-24D gives full tilt and swivel flexibility. I'm using Really Right Stuff Snap QR quick releases to mount both the ball head and sync cord. This combination add a bit of weight, but is noticeably lighter than mounting the SF-58. sillbeers15 Posted February 10, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 10, 2014 Luke, Did you encounter hotshoe contact misalignment when you use the Nikon or Nissin cord? When I plug in a Nikon (3rd party China made hotshoe extention w. PC syn), I got massively over exposed pics (almostly completely white pics). I read you other post which you've mentioned wider 2 rear contact pins of Nikon config hotshoe over Leica M hotshoe. Out of curiousity, I traced the contact pins off the SF58 flash and do a map over the Nikon hotshoe config, I found otherwise. Yes the lower 2 nikon config hotshoe pins were wider apart compared to Leica M hotshoe. However the contact patch does overlap, solthe connection is fine. My findings are that when the Leica flash pins are mapped over the Nikon ones, there is an overall misalignment on the linear direction which both flash pins and hotshoe slide on to make contact. In simple language, the Nikon flash pins needed to be not fully slide into Leica hotshoe to make good contact. I tried deliberately mis aligning the Nikon adapter pins to my Leica Hotshoe but keeping the leica pins fully engeged into the Nikon config hotshoe adapter and the connection worked. I got a correctly exposed pic on TTL. Now I have to figure a way to block the Nikon config hotshoe adapter from sliding fully into my leica hotshoe! Luke_Miller Posted February 10, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted February 10, 2014 Luke,Did you encounter hotshoe contact misalignment when you use the Nikon or Nissin cord? I have used Nikon cords (SC-17 & SC-28) as well as a Vello cord. Have not tried a Nissin. The problems I've experienced all appear to be at the flash end when using a Leica flash rather than camera end. My Nikon SB-800 flashes will work (manual and A mode) in the camera hot shoe, but it is a very close thing. One SB-800 will mount and lock into the the camera hot shoe, while the other will mount, but not lock.
sillbeers15 Posted February 20, 2014 Share #4 Posted February 20, 2014 According to my findings on image matching of Leica and Nikon hotshoes (as above pics) and actual test findings. I conclude that it is ok for Leica SF58 flash to sit well in to a Nikon hotshoe (push SF58 flash all the way into Nikon hotshoe slot and lock connection. For Nikon hotshoe adapter to be mounted with good contacts on Leica M240 hotshoe, the Nikon adapter cannot be pushed all the way into the Leica hotshoe slot. A 1mm gap provision should be made for my tests to get properly exposed TTL pics. I have used Nikon cords (SC-17 & SC-28) as well as a Vello cord. Have not tried a Nissin.
