topoxforddoc Posted September 14, 2014 Share #1  Posted September 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I came back early from the Goodwood Revival, so that I could see my youngest son installed as the Deputy Head Chorister at Gloucester Cathedral this afternoon. Anyway I am just going to post a couple of examples of this lens combo with the S 006 - all handheld.  Mark Webber in Jackie Stewart's Championship winning Matra F1 car One of the Grid girls in the Formula Junior race 2 Spitfires and a Hurricane from one of the flying displays Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Hi topoxforddoc, Take a look here S 006 with 280/4 APO Telyt R and 1.4x APO converter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
peterv Posted September 14, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted September 14, 2014 Hi Charlie, Â thanks for sharing. Colour and contrast certainly looks like a Leica lens. I guess if this were an S 280 mm, the results might be sharper, though. Are these 100% crops? Maybe a bit too much noise reduction?
bab Posted September 15, 2014 Share #3 Â Posted September 15, 2014 Looks like the lens is front focusing or focus lock on wrong places Shot with driver in car focus hit plastic with the rivet Shot with girl focus might have grabbed edge of sign Nice colors though
wildlightphoto Posted September 15, 2014 Share #4  Posted September 15, 2014 Looks like the lens is front focusing or focus lock on wrong places  Manual focus lenses don't 'front focus' or 'focus lock'. I suspect the pictures would be sharper with a solid tripod instead of hand-held.
John McMaster Posted September 15, 2014 Share #5 Â Posted September 15, 2014 I would not expect to handhold that combination at 1/500th, that is usually the minimum shutter speed I try to use with the 120mm. I find the battery grip helps with hand holding at slower speeds if required. Are you using a microprism focussing screen Charlie? Â john
topoxforddoc Posted September 15, 2014 Author Share #6  Posted September 15, 2014 Doing anything other than handholding in a grandstand or enclosure is pretty much a no-no really. Also, it's too hard to follow the planes on a tripod. The Canberra and Hunter were far too fast for that on a fly past.  I am used to hand holding my DMR with this combo (or my 180/2 Summicron). Hand holding this sort of weight is hard, so I don't get as many keepers. For instance, photographing drummers means that I take the shutter speed right down to 1/60th or slower to get motion blur on the sticks. But with this, I don't have to go to the gym. Maybe, a steady surgeon's hand helps a bit!  Having had a bit more time to go through my shots, here are some more samples.  Mark Webber again in the Matra with a crop  Austin J35 Pilote - Settrington Cup with a crop  Another Spitfire and Hurricane shot with crop  English Electric Canberra and Hawker Hunter  I didn't walk round the track this year, to get the cars at the apex of corners. I decided that more champagne in the company of my friends was a slightly better alternative. Welcome, dear visitor! topoxforddoc Posted September 15, 2014 Author Share #7 Â Posted September 15, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry, I forgot to answer a couple of queries. Â No S Grip (haven't bought one yet) Standard ground glass screen (actually that's my favourite anyway - shooting gigs in low light with a micro prism is hard) Â Clearly a bit more practice (or maybe less champagne) might help. But I was there to have fun too for the weekend.
John McMaster Posted September 15, 2014 Share #8 Â Posted September 15, 2014 You will find that 37.5 MP is a lot fussier than 10MP ;-) Â john

Likaleica Posted September 18, 2014 Share #12 Â Posted September 18, 2014 Thanks, Charlie. I believe you have solved my dilemma. Didn't think I could hit infinity with an R lens but knowing that the 1.4 puts it there I think I'll click over to eBay and see what's available. Â Nice shots, by the way. Doug Herr said that there were slight differences in focus throw between the 3cam and ROM lenses. Mine is a 3cam lens, which rotates past infinity up to the m/ft mark on the barrel. Apparently the ROM lenses may not rotate as far.  Charlie
