Some concerns have been expressed about the corner sharpness of the Summilux 24 on the M9. Judge for yourself (nothing special artistically). Full image and 100% crop of the lower lefthand corner.

I'm also wondering whether to keep the 24/1.4 or sell it to help fund the M9. On the M9 it will be rather wide for my taste and the extra DR reduces the need for f/1.4 (except for the rendering of course).

I would be very grateful for a DNG of the above shot and an f/1.4 shot too.

I think a few of us will be making this decision - I went through a great rush of lens buying to make the M8 work, but am no seriously considering going over to a 2 M9 system (I really don't enjoy working the M8 and M9 in tandem) and will probably sell some lenses to fund the second body. At the moment the 75 cron asph looks like a contender - I don't feel the need for anything between 50 and 90 and on the M9 the 90 cron asph is a thing of great beauty!

Hi Chris,

To my surprise I've found that I've been using my 75 Summarit quite a lot on the M9 (rather more than my 90 Summicron) - though the 'cron is optically rather better than the Summarit, I'm not sure which one I'd sell if I needed the money to pay for another body. Happily, I'm quite content with the one M9 body I've already got.

Geoff

Chris- Interesting to hear you say this. I spent the past week sailing in a classic yacht regatta and used my M8.2 as a back up to the M9. The first decision was what to do about swopping lenses between the 2 cameras and therefore what to do about IR filters. I decided to present as much as possble in B&W and where colour was necessary to make a point of shooting with the M9. This is great in theory, however it's not really practical in the heat of the moment. I still love my M8.2, however I took a decision in the middle of all of this to go for a 2nd M9 body and offload the M8.2 (I've just offloaded my M8, three bodies is over kill). The one lens I found that I'm using less is the 24mm Elmarit, I used my 12mm C/V and the WATE to great effect, however the 24mm was too close to the 28mm Summicron on the M9.

The other thing that I found about using the M8.2 & M9 in tandem is the havoc it plays in getting your head around the difference in the frame lines when swopping one camera for the other in fast shooting situations.

Speaking of decisions decisions; in terms of not selling the M8.2 there's only one issue that I'm playing with in my mind and that is that I do a great deal of wildlife photography, and love doing so with a range finder. The crop factor on the M8.2 gives me an effective focal length of roughly 180mm on my 135mm APO-TELYT and so on with my VISOFLEX & associated lenses. So do I hold onto the M8.2 for this reason alone???

Bearing all of this in mind, the more I use the M9 it's very clear to me why Leica dicontinued the M8, a decision many in this Forum questioned. The M8 is still a great camera IMO. However based on my experience this past week it's not as easy as it sounds to use the 2 in tandem in fast shooting situations, maybe it's different in a more sedate shooting environment.

I'm one of us who will be keeping my M8.2 as the M9 back-up. For me its too much cash to get a second M9 right now.

In regard to the IR filters, I have left mine on the 24 lux and do not yet seem to see the cyan drift (when using the M9) that everyone is talking about. I bought a series VII UV filter (B + W) from B and H but it seems to rattle around in the lens hood more than the Leica UV/IR filter so I a) don't like that rattle and B) don't like the hassle of switching or removing filters when going between cameras. Also, unlike many on this forum I keep a filter on all lenses.

An expert with Leica has told me that perhaps the 24 lux, with the way the front element is designed, does not have the cyan drift you see in other 24s or other wide angles lenses. What do any of the other experts who read this forum think about that? Sean Reid- any thoughts?

This makes no sense. Some people still think that the M8's crop gives them an extra reach that the M9 doesn't have. Wrong. Think about it.

No, because the pixel density is the same. Crop the M9 by 1.33x and you have the same size image as the M8, but with better dynamic range and no need for IR filters.

Any of you experts want to take a stab at the issue below that I brought up yesterday?
