algrove Posted March 19, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2013 Erick It takes time to get used to it, I know. Make sure with LV on you hit the #3 button on front AND then turn the focus knob to active everything you want. With this camera the manual, though poorly written, will help immensely at times. Louis the focus know is it the wheel on the thumb ? if I do that I get the zoom but no focus peaking and do you get a normal preview after a shot ? yes I am a little lost :-) thanks
Ecar Posted March 19, 2013 Share #6 Posted March 19, 2013 OK, your settings seem fine. Since you are in auto mode, you shouldn't need to push the button on the front of the camera. Now, go to LV or the EVF and turn the thumb wheel to increase magnification to x5 or x10. Then turn the focus knob on the lens. You should now see the red focus peaking lines when there's something in focus.

I have tried what you say but I don't see the focus peaking , I don't want to see the focus peaking on x5 or x10 but on x1 , I see no interest to have the focus peaking on x10 or am I missing something ? is there a simple way to have always focus peaking on ? And I really do not understand why there is a Video button (M) on top and not a custom button instead thank you
Ecar Posted March 19, 2013 Share #9 Posted March 19, 2013 Yes, that's what I meant. It also works without magnification - it's just easier to check at x5 or x10. With apparently the same settings as yours, the focus peaking on my camera is always on (to o1af: that is, when I decide to use the EVF - perhaps in 1 in 10 shots only, but it's really useful for those). With apparently the same settings as yours, the focus peaking on my camera is always on (to o1af: that is, when I decide to use LV or the EVF - perhaps in 10% only of the shots, but it's really useful for those). I have a NEX 6 and I use Leica lenses on it only with focus peaking , it works very well at x1 at x1 5 or 10 there is no focus peaking on mine
CaptZoom Posted March 19, 2013 Share #11 Posted March 19, 2013 Maybe it's a firmware issue. Is your camera updated?

CaptZoom Posted March 19, 2013 Share #13 Posted March 19, 2013 Sorry Erick, I do not own the new M and I do have experience with the NEX series. Whenever I have trouble with gear, I try to eliminate the obvious first. Good luck with the problem. I'm sure the more experienced will start chiming in shortly. algrove Posted March 19, 2013 Share #14 Posted March 19, 2013 Erick-For what's it worth I will go through the Main Menu first-important settings to this discussion. I immediately installed new FW due to wide angle lens use benefit. Main Menu Light Metering Mode=Advanced Frameline Color=Red Focus Peaking=On Focus Aid=Automatic Then with the Main Menu not on LCD, Press Set White Balance=Automatic Shutter Speed dial set to A for this example Now press the shutter release button half way. When you press it do you see on the LCD a white dot light up on top line right of center between ISO and EV? If you see it you have exposure lock where you are aiming the camera. Now turn the lens focus ring and in a seconds, the magnification wheel comes into the top right of the LCD starting at your last setting which on a new camera should be 1x. It is the turning of the focus ring that activates the "current zoom factor" p.241 definition. The first time I had to press the #3 button on the front of the camera, but since then the turning of the focus on the lens activates it. Forgot to say that the first time you spin the focus of your lens you might go right past the small red lines for a couple of times as they are very thin. Let me know if you get it to work. StephenPatterson Posted March 20, 2013 Share #17 Posted March 20, 2013 The focus peaking on the M(240) is very subtle, and almost impossible to see at 1x. When you magnify out to 5x and 10x it is much more prominent, but only with high contrast subjects. I expect this to be addressed in a firmware upgrade, hopefully as a user selectable level of focus peaking aid. What we have now can best be described as "light". jaapv Posted March 20, 2013 Share #20 Posted March 20, 2013 Surely the intensity of the focus peaking depends on the contrast of the subject like any focussing aid?
