Had the good fortune to be on a panel/in a show with legendary SF rock photographer Jim Marshall at Seattle's EMP last weekend. He was sporting his new signature M9 which was given to him by Leica. Very cool.

(shot was iso 2500 with 50 1.4 pre-asph. Best I could do without flash and close up lens).

Leica also offered me my signature on the M8 even if I'm not Jim Marshall :p

Yes, it's cool.

Very cool! Thanks Charles, I'm big Jim Marshall fan nice to see one of the great older photographers using some new digital stuff especially the M9. Does Jim shoot all his work with the M9?

Charles, I also love your work as well! This is really cool that your on this site. I've had you book Screaming Life for years and have always enjoyed it. Your new one touch me I'm sick is on my list!

No, Jim just received this M9 from Leica. He said it's actually his first digital camera and isn't really used to it yet. He also said he probably wouldn't have ever gotten a digital camera if it wasn't for the gratitude of Leica. BTW that's another legend, Henry Diltz, next to him on the panel.

Here's a couple more (M9 with 35 Lux asph iso 2500).

Charles, I guess your snaps prove that if some of us Leica-M users are old farts - at least we are cool, trendy-looking turtleneck-wearing old farts. ;)

I wonder how long it'll take JM to wear his M9 down to a nice patina like his M4:

This is pretty sweet, ArtZ. How did you provide a signature sample to Leica? I'm sending in my M9 for some repairs next month and I was thinking of getting an engraving done.

Scott,

My camera was already at Solms for the frame lines and sapphire upgrade. I send my signature by email. This was a present from Leica. I think otherwise it costs something like 450-500 €

PS: They also replaced the "Red Dot" for a "Black Dot", as you can see in the picture ;)

I see, it might take him a little getting using to for him, but he should feel right at home in no time hopefully. Looks like you are enjoying the M9?

Yeah, I love that photo of Jim's camera. It has seen a lot over the years that's for sure!

I'm curious if he will really start using his M9 in earnest, or if he will continue to rely mostly on his many film M bodies (20-something bodies in his collection, IIRC).

Honestly I don't think he shoots that much anymore and when he does I don't think the cost of film and processing is a problem. But who knows? Nice gesture on Leicas part though.

Nice to see smiling Jimmy up that is what Jim calls that shot of Hendrix. Jim showed up in Sun Valley about 10 years ago doing a show here. I showed up at his dinner out first night here, with my new wife, he sees me and goes, "you I know you", and said yes Jim we have known each other for about 15 years. I am form NYC and shot Rock and roll for years. He finds out that I had just gotten married and says to my wife and I come back to the place after dinner I'll give you a print. We go back I took him aside and said Jim I got a problem she want Jimmy and I want Janis. He slaps me lightly across the face and said take 2 photos. The smiling Jimmy and Janis with the southern comfort bottle. For years afterward my wife would say to guests want to see my wedding photos, and then show them Jimmy and Janis.
