M9 not in list of cameras in Apple RAW update

I was surprised not to see the M9 listed in the latest RAW update from Apple today. I checked on the Apple website to see if I had missed this and it had been on a previous update but only various P&S plus the M8 and M8-2 are listed as supported. Now I am aware that at least iPhoto and finder 'see' M9 files but would I be right in assuming that in particular Aperture, will not be able to take advantage of the embedded information on the M9 files, unless specific DNG support has been added. This would be similar to LR2.5, which can only see the embedded profile, if you have installed LR3 beta.

HI Wilson

Aperture does a fine job with M9 files - drop 'boost' by 50% and increase red hue by 10% and you're cooking! (whatever the support issue might be).

I have LR3 beta and Capture 1 5 pro, but I still prefer Aperture.

On the other hand, the fact that they're still ignoring all the m4/3 cameras, the d-lux4, and anything else with lens corrections is tragic and irritating.

One can only assume that they really don't want to be competing with lightroom.

it's very sad.

It doesn't surprise me. Apple makes a very half-hearted effort to support new cameras and this unreliable, unpredicatable support is one of the reasons I abandoned Aperture several years ago. The irony is that this niche player in the computer world is the least likely to support the niche players in the camera world.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Apple fan and I worked for the company in a senior role for over a decade. They do many things well but they just don't get it when it comes to photography.

Aperture has no support for any RAW file format that requires software correction for chromatic and spherical aberration. The users who post in the Apple Discussion Forums tend to see the lack of support for particular cameras (such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 and Leica D-Lux 4) one model at a time, but there is a systematic problem with serious compact cameras, which did not exist when Aperture was introduced. I have never seen Apple engage in a slow-motion public relations trainwreck in any other area.

From what I've heard at the Leica Erlebnistage, Leica already sent M9 cameras to Apple, so a RAW update will come out eventually.

Best regards,

Michael

Sounds like Steve is out taking photos with them rather than handing them over to the Aperture engineers. Don't blame him!

HI Michael - I think they also have d-lux4 cameras.

I'm with ceflynn - it's like a slow motion train wreck, and very sad - I still like it much better than Lightroom, but I'm increasingly wondering if they'll even carry on with it.

I can see that there might be some technical difficulties with the corrections - but there is no excuse not to put in the colour profiles for the M9 - it can't be more than a few hours work.

I'm extremely fond of Apple, much like I am of Leica. They make exceptional products.

But when I was evaluating Aperture vs. Lightroom a few years ago, one of the big factors in my decision to go with Adobe was that camera and profile updates in Aperture must await an OS X update. Even though Apple provides those os updates at reasonable intervals, they're still much more complicated and further apart than what Adobe has to do with Lightroom.

HI Jeff

Actually, that is not the case - they have just done updates for a number of cameras without the need for an os update.

The trouble is that they don't do updates often enough, but they certainly don't need an os update to do them.

Thank you so much for the tip on reducing boost!

Hi Jono,

I just wanted to try out your hint but I’m not sure whether I understand it the right way.

You probably mean the adjustments of the RAW fine tuning parameters which in standard mode are as follows:

  • Boost = 1.00
  • Hue Boost = 0.50
  • Sharpening = 0.75
  • Edges = 0.52
  • Moire = 0.00
  • Radius = 4.00

I understand that you change your setting for Boost = 0.50

But what do you mean with "increase red hue by 10 %"?

Confused

Holger
