Mauribix Posted August 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) This thread to share with you all my experience. As some may remember, after some troubles I had in a couple of years with my M8 (then M8u), it has been replaced with a brand new M8u camera. I'd like to thank Andrea in Solms, and share with you my satisfaction in using Leica cameras once again. FYI, I actually noticed a huge difference in resolution a colours... may it be just "placebo" effect, or may this new camera somehow better "tuned" or something like that? Dunno, FWIW, now I'm fine. Photon42 Posted August 2, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 2, 2009 Great it worked out well for you. No matter if your observation is purely subjective - it certainly shows you like the result. That's what counts. Enjoy Ivo
Mauribix Posted August 2, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted August 2, 2009 Thank you all guys! @Kalina: I don't know how to make a side by side shot since my "old" M8 is gone, and it wouldn't be fair to reproduce an already shot scene with different light condition... btw that's just a feeling, and matter of fact my M8 was one of the first in production. @Chris: Thank you my friend! Hope to meet ya somehow in the future. @Ivo: you got it!

cbretteville Posted August 2, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mine was back a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't have a chance to pick it up before Monday. Very happy with the work they've done. The shutter is so quiet it makes me smile each time I trip it. The frame lines finally makes sense. It feels like all the controls have been tightened and the shutter release feels less gritty than I remember it. The time it took was a lot longer than what I expected, but thanks to another extremely kind forum member I had an M8 to use while mine was away. - Carl

ArtZ Posted August 3, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 3, 2009 This thread to share with you all my experience. As some may remember, after some troubles I had in a couple of years with my M8 (then M8u), it has been replaced with a brand new M8u camera. FYI, I actually noticed a huge difference in resolution a colours... may it be just "placebo" effect, or may this new camera somehow better "tuned" or something like that? Dunno, FWIW, now I'm fine. Maurizio, May I ask you a question? What's the SN of your replacement (new) camera? The reason I'm asking you this, it's because my camera have been replaced, as yours. I had the frame lines and the LCD cover upgraded but not the shutter. Leica proposed me a replacement for a M8.2. I said to Leica I'd prefer to keep the 1/8000 shutter speed if possible. They told me they will "build" a new camera. Now, the funny thing is that the SN of the new camera 3196098 is from summer 2007 production... (I had another M8 I bought in September 2007 before the price increase with a slightly higher SN -about 300 more). I called Leica and when they checked the serial number, they said that this camera was built on May this year... but they also told me that's impossible because they haven't built any M8 in 2009... At the end, they couldn't tell me when the camera was built. They had no clue! What it's even more surprising it's the fact the date was set on 3 May 2009 when I turned on the camera the first time. Firmware was 2.004 and image ID (in decimal) was 425 (pictures taken at the factory) which sounds to me a bit high. A friend from here suggested Leica has probably built it from spare parts. But why this SN has not been taken? Last M8 built had SN 3 2xx xxx... so, even if it's built from spares, the SN should be 32xxxxx... Though, the camera works flawlessly. Rangefinder alignment is perfect. I'm very happy with the replacement... but I'd like to understand why I have an old SN... Any thoughts? Cheers
Mauribix Posted August 3, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted August 3, 2009 Artz, I wouldn't mind too much for the S/N, anyway my camera is 351xxxx, and that sounds odd too, since that shouldn't be possible for an M8 BTW, I guess that in these cases the s/n is just relative. I received by the italian distributor a new warranty booklet where everything's wrote down... But then again, now we both have a collector's M8 as well, isn't it? Maurizio, You have a very new one, probably one of the latest made. This is weird, indeed. My replacement camera arrived directly from Solms on Monday 27th. I believe mine is probably a refurbished one. Well, we'll see... I just hope nothing goes wrong again... otherwise, I think, I will travel to Solms and someone will eat it (and no salt, no pepper!). Promised! Well, enjoy your M8, Maurizio! Ciao
Mauribix Posted August 3, 2009 Author Share #18 Posted August 3, 2009 Artz, FYI I'm having trouble right now, since today I could extensively test my "new" M8... My Sandisk SDHC UltraII (16Gb) card is not working properly... Or at least my M8 wasn't working properly with that card (It always worked like a charm with my "old" M8), so I just bought another 4Gb Kingston SDHC memory card, and... guess what? It's not working properly too!!! Maybe I'm not that lucky today, so I came back to my office and tried both cards with my DLUX-4. Guess what? They work like a charm with the DLUX... Now I'm testing all my cards (I have a whole bunch of SDs, so I have a lot of work to do), BTW I'm fearing something... I'm getting several errors, and usually it happens like this: Put the memory inside the camera, Format the card with the M8, shot some, get "card full" error, switch off the camera, switch on the camera, get again "card full" error, switch off the camera, switch on the camera, get once again "card full" error, so I format the card again, I suddenly get "card full" error and can't shot any... Switch off the camera, remove the battery (more than once), sometimes it starts working properly, sometimes not. (I'm angry) I format the card once again, It works. I shot some... till I get "card full" error again. Then I switch off and on the camera again, and start from the beginning... SO, What's that???? Oh, I did mind: every time I get the "card full" error I can't preview any picture on the display, and seldom I see just the name of the file on it... Dunno what's happening to my camera, I'm just afraid.
Photon42 Posted August 3, 2009 Share #19 Posted August 3, 2009 Mauribix, very sorry to hear you're having problems again. Did you check your firmware version? Have you tried a card which is known to work even with older firmware (SanDisk 2GB for example)? As a last try, I would then probably keep the battery out for a longer period, say 24h. Then put it back in and retry with a SanDisk 2GB. Then I'd call the L-company. Hope you get it back on track. Ivo
ArtZ Posted August 4, 2009 Share #20 Posted August 4, 2009 Maurizio, Porca miseria! I'm sorry to hear that. First thing, as Photon42 says, check the firmware version... maybe the forgot to update the camera at FW 2.004... Who knows! I always thought it was a problem with the format of the card. It happened with previous firmware versions (1.xxx), cards were not properly formatted on the camera. I used to format them using a Windows computer (Macintosh writes hidden files on external media) and since then I never had a problem. (I still do that now, anyway) WIlfredo had the same problem than you. He sent his camera to NJ to be repaired for this SD card problem but he got it back in the same condition few weeks later... While I visited him last April, we made a test formatting the card in his Mac... but it didn't work. We tried the card on my two M8 and it was working flawless... but also on a Digilux 3, a Ricoh GR2 and a Canon G10! We also tried to format the card on in my Windows laptop and I think this helped (at least for a while -I remember Wilfredo telling me later he got the problem again). I think now his M8 it's working properly. You should ask him by PM (maybe he's also reading this post) how he managed or his tips. Worth trying before sending back the camera to Solms... Just one thing I can tell you, it is you should never delete images with the "Delete" button on the camera. Doing so, you can easily get corrupted data. Now, you can try this (it won't hurt the cards nor the camera): Try to format your SD card on a Windows computer and be sure that the option "Quick format" is unselected. The camera (M8) performs only a "Quick Format" without checking all sectors. According to Microsoft: "When you choose to run a regular format on a volume, files are removed from the volume that you are formatting and the hard disk is scanned for bad sectors. The scan for bad sectors is responsible for the majority of the time that it takes to format a volume. If you choose the Quick format option, format removes files from the partition, but does not scan the disk for bad sectors. Only use this option if your hard disk has been previously formatted and you are sure that your hard disk is not damaged." Hope that helps.
