I think we're pretty lucky and I will echo the sentiments of several other lurkers, here.

Leica is really hanging in there, listening to our pains, and making fixes at a sensible rate. The M8 still works. I know there are some with problems, but there are a lot of these guys out there working properly.

Even the SDHC card guys seem to be having problems.

I had to send my M8 in because of the shutter/switch problem. I did so just before the warranty expiration, as well. It's nice having it back in my hands. It did well this weekend during a series of dance shoots.

I took some pictures with my 1Ds III & 50 mm 1,0L while leaving Helsinki by boat for Stockholm, last Thursday. It was a dark late afternoon overlooking the lights from the city. The files are full of mystical green 'blobs' (reflections from the sensor), color fringes and strange streaks all over the frame. Things that would make just any M8 owner go bananas.

I for one cherish my M8's occasional green stripe!

These cameras are all based in the same technology and no one is immune.

I think we've got a superb tool in the M8 and no reason to complain.

And yes, Jaap, maybe you're right that "Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude." :D

Thanks, jack for calling our attention to the matter!

FLASH: I got my first green stripe this weekend, shooting from the wings in a dance show.

Unless I just happened to hit the sweet spot on the sensor's edge when I got it, it seems as if it is more likely to happen with the bright light source coming at an angle to the sensor rather than perpendicular.

I shot a lot of pix with the light oncoming. Dunno if this is the correct diagnosis or not. I'll take a closer look at the offending pic tonite.

first the AF issues of the 1ds mkiii

and now the mysetrious 'Black dot' issue of the 5d mkii

which is all over the forums and appears to be quite a BIG problem

(see example below !)

who says only the M8 has problems/foibles:

I don't get it. I downloaded this giant file, and I don't see a particular problem. Am I missing something obvious?

Apparently so.

Can you not see all the little black dots abutting the points of light? They're all over the place in that shot. Certainly the worst I've seen.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have a "classic" 5D, no black dots. It is a nice companion to the Classic M8.

Cheers

'Black dot' issue of the 5d mkii
From the 5D mkii fanclub I expect they will say "at last we have a camera so good that it manages to capture the black dots that so far no other camera could handle". That's what we would do under similar duress;)

Also some rather "Leica-like" chroma noise in the mid-greys, btw.

After a couple weeks with my 5DMKII, I find it's the best camera I have owned in 35 years. (Nikons film, Blads, 4x5, 6x9 etc.

Last evening I did some scans of slides and neg's that won contest in the 80's and I can say we are more that one step ahead for sure... Take your 5D back there will be someone who will buy it to take pictures instead sitting on their duff and picking apart things that IMO are of little interest. Every Camera that has come out has the same people problems.

Remember the D3, 1DsMKIII, and on and on... get over it use it instead of just looking at it on the shelf.

Example, the red ghost on the top focus dot.. yes it's there, I think... only noticed it after so talk about it....200-300 images later It' may still be there, I don't pay much attention to it.. but the things that count, image quality,etc... Great Camera...

Now a post like this might have appeared on a Leica forum a year ago. Thank the Lord we seem to be past that stage....

Lurker chiming in here: I had a 1DS-MKIII and sold it, keeping my Mk-II. Learned my lesson, and will keep my 5D-MKI. IMHO the DS-III and 5D-II may be a bridge too far, Canon's jumping the shark in the megapixel race. The Mk-III produces huge files, but for the most part, it's wasted (unless you crop severely). 12-16MP in a FF 24x36 chip might be the upper limit of practical use with current technology.

What is my point regarding Leica, is that we should not push for Leica to incorporate a FF sensor and/or more resolution unless they can do it without compromises to image quality or usability.

Recognized as OT--Not an attempt to hijack the thread.

Bill--

Congratulations on going this long without it! Interesting that the angle of light might affect it. Keep us updated. Image below is from 21mm.

As you know, classic Green Stripe occurs when a bright source lies just outside the M8 image frame. The light source can extend from inside to outside the frame, but it has to catch the pixels just outside the image area just right.

The result is a green stripe running from the affected short edge to the center of the frame.

I've had the effect only once, and it took a while for me to diagnose it even though I was aware of the problem. (Stripe here extends from window at upper left.)

jackal--

Interesting figure, that mannequin guy in drag with the ballsy hair-do on the right-hand side.

Curious--I don't visit the Canon forums and hadn't heard of this effect. Thanks again for showing us. Any reasonable speculation so far on what causes it?

Here's my shot.

As you can see the bright lite is hitting the sensor edge from something like a 45 degree angle.

There are also reflections at the right side.

It's interesting because I do these shots all the time and this is the first one in 2 years. There have been several thousand shots with these light sources in the frame.

Guess it's just that exact spot at the edge....

It's absolutely wild that this doesn't infect the rest of the image.
