Ordering UV/IR Filters

Yesterday evening, I attempted to order the free UV/IR filters for my M8 using the Leica website. Everything went OK until I submitted the request, at which point I was greeted by a blank screen. As I have not received any other form of confirmation such as an e-mail, I don't know the status of the order.

I did try ringing Leica UK, who could only suggest e-mailing Solms as they had no way of establishing if my request has been received.

Is this normal practice for Leica or should I be concerned?

No-they are seemingly having a bit of trouble with that section of the website.

Yes, there are also delays in getting M8.2's recognized on the website, but that is supposed to be fixed any day now...

Does anyone know if the series 7 or series 8 IR/UV filters can be ordered when you register a new purchase of an M8 or M8.2?

They were not available up to now, only the sizes of the current lenses. I believe Leica reintroduced series filters with the new lenses, if so I would suppose they would become available as soon as these lenses start being sold. Otherwise, all series filters can be ordered form B&W.

The reason I asked was that I'd like to use my 2 free filters from a recent M8.2 purchase to get the more expensive series 7 or 8 filters. But I can't get far enough through the website to see if they were available even for order. The 21/1.4 is due in the stores before Christmas.

Thanks for the responses.

I received an e-mail from Solms today which seems to confirm that they have the order, but needed my address. Which is strange as it was already there from my earlier registration of the camera on the site.

Fingers crossed that everything will go smoothly from here.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of days ago. After selecting two filters, I pressed 'continue' to be greeted by a blank page. I think they've been having problems with the site. It was down for a few days last week and due to reopen on the 7th, according to the note that stayed there until the 9th...

I assume that my order has gone through (or at least been recognised) as the offer disappeared from the 'benefits' page of my account. I haven't received any confirmation from Solms yet though. I'll give it a couple of days an see what happens.

I agree, the customer profile section and its benefits seem to be working. Don't expect old data to have been carried forward, however. A camera still under warranty from months ago might need to be reentered.

I checked the IR/UV filter ordering page. It still lists only the E39 through E67 sizes that support lenses presently manufactured. I called Leica Customer Service in Germany, and asked about the series 7 and 8 filters (for the new lenses announced at FotoKina). The answer is that they do plan to offer those through this plan, but don't have a firm date for when that will start.

B+W can supply Series VII filters - you're looking for a 486 filter. As an alternative, if the filter is for a Pre-ASPH 35mm Summilux you can use a normal 46mm fitted in the lens hood as you would a Series VII. Can't speak for any other lenses as the 35mm Summilux is the only Series VIII lens that I own.

Unfortunately the 486 B&W (Schneider) filter has a different characteristic than the composition that Leica ended up specifying, so for lenses as wide as the coming 21 and 24 Summiluxes, the firmware will at least try to do the right thing for the weaker Leica filters and may not remove the cast that results in the corner with the 486's. But the differences are not too great, the firmware is not all that accurate, so you may be right after all. Maybe I will wait to see if Sean Reid can tell the difference.

I've been using a B+W 486 with my 24mm Elmarit without noticing any problem.

The offer has also disappeared from my benefits, but it might be best to drop Solms a line. They claimed to need advice of my address, even though it had been included in one of the earlier screens. When I confirmed by e-mail, I also restated my request, only to be informed that I had specified an E60 instead of E46. I am certain that the last screen I received before the blank one showed the correct filters, otherwise I would not have submitted the order.

It's all a bit frustrating. I had wanted the filters for next week, but had been held up by several days by the unavailability of the website, only to find that there are still ongoing problems with it. I am far from impressed with Leica's lacklustre and clumsy management of its website.

The contact address I used is m8.support@leica-camera.com.

Curious. The registration worked fine when I put my M8.2 up last weekend.

For some reason though, the LFI site isn't recognizing the camera's serial when I try to get the free 1 year sub. Maybe there's a link between that and the problems described in this thread.

I have received an e-mail from Solms saying that the registration process is still not functioning and it is not possible for them to state when the filters I have requested will be dispatched.

  • 2 months later...

I finally received my filters today, just a few days short of three months since I initially wanted to order them. First the website was down for several days for an unscheduled outage and then when it was restored, it was not working properly - something that Leica has acknowledged to me. Leica UK did not want to know anything about it and insisted I had to deal with Germany to sort things out. Each country really does seem to operate as separate companies.

E-mailing Solms would have been OK, if they had actually arranged delivery of the filters. Having given them all the information they requested, two weeks later they decided they needed my phone number as well, which was also supplied. My last e-mail to them on 18 December enquiring about the status of the order never merited a response.

The filters are only here now because last week I phoned Leica UK, who expected me to phone Germany to chase up the order. I had to tell them that it was not acceptable to expect me to expend effort resolving a problem that leica itself had caused. At which point Leica UK agreed to send them.

Just how difficult is it to put a couple of filters in a Jiffy bag and give them to Fedex? This experience has hardly left me feeling valued as a customer.
