And in perfect condition!

Yes, my both M8s arrived today from Leica Camerakankenhaus!

RF is spot on (just perfect in every way), new frame lines (MUCH more accurate than the old ones with 50, 75 and 90mm lenses), new LCD cover (the sapphire glass is less prominent than the old one, only a very slim part of it is out of the rear part of the camera -nice!), new top plate, new signature on the top plate (wow! they did a fantastic engraving job), new vulcanite, new "Black Dot", new model leather half-cases and, above all, a happy customer.

Ahhh... As I forgot to send my warranty cards, they have included two new warranty cards with the new expiration date of both cameras after the upgrade (June and Septembre 2010)

Yes... I'm happy... Thank you, CS... this time you got it right!

We need a picture! :D

The new LCD screen is less prominent? Could you post a photo of that? Hadn't considered it, but if it sits more flushly than the old one I might go for it.

Promised, I´ll post a picture tomorrow (it's 23:45 in Paris and I need some natural light).

I hope I will be able to show the difference in thickness. There's a small prominence in the plastic where are the buttons and wheel (see your camera). The sapphire glass is almost at this level ~ +0.3-0.5mm. With the old model you can really see the borders of the LCD cover. Besides, inside the sapphire glass there's a frame which looks a bit like in the front part of the RF). Looks really nice...even if it doesn't affect to the quality of the pictures

Did you went for the 1/4000 shutter ?

Niet! I use relatively often 1/8000

I prefer to keep the actual shutter sound than loosing 1/8000, especially when Leica doesn't propose the delayed shutter cocking with the upgrade.

Also I believe the shutter upgrade is just an "attrape-nigaud"... you pay to correct an inherent design flaw. If my shutter comes apart... maybe will be replaced under warranty... maybe I have to pay for it... we'll see...

Oh man, I checked out the new shutter today on an 8.2 and I have to say it's a LOT quieter. And the overall vibration a LOT less. Really makes it like an M7 (or even quiter). To me it's now so quiet that the discreet mode would be nice to have but not that necessary.

The screen does fit flusher now that I think about - but not $500 flusher IMO. Overall I found the build quality of the 8.2 to be better (I was looking at a silver model which is what I have in "classic"). Framelines much more accurate esp with 28 and they don't cut off any at the closest.

So I'll be doing the upgrade of framelines and shutter. If some clients come through may throw on the sapphire screen and vulcanite just to be complete but we'll see (with a baby on the way this red dot sickness has to come to an end).

Enjoy your "new" cameras.

I got new vulcanite for free because the Leica leather half-case damages the original vulcanite. Leica also replaced both half-case for a new model, the top plate in one camera (it was scratched) and they engraved the other one with my signature. All this for free... (even transport Paris-Solms-Paris ... they picked up both cameras at home). I just paid two upgrades for framelines and sapphire glass.Total cost for both cameras: 1900 €

And the main reason for not upgrading the shutter is I want to keep 1/8000...

I will post some pictures later today (I don't have a M8 with me right now).

The new leather have case has improved sewing (inside). In the old model the edges were thicker due to sewing. These thicker edges were responsible for the vulcanite damage. The fasten clips are now mounted in the opposite direction: you unfasten them now from back to front. Otherwise, there's no major difference.

Cheers

No, the old framelines are not a design flaw. I regularly shoot at close range (4-6ft.) and the old framelines are perfect for that. I would hate to cut off someone's face in a fleeting moment. When shooting at infinity, I have a lot more time to reframe and get another shot.

Fully agree, a lens such as the Elmarit 2.8/24mm is well used at 4 feet, and then you do need a more precise framing. I use this setting for street photography, with f8.

I think you all need to go and actually try the new framelines. They don't cut off anything at close range (that I could tell) and are actually still a bit loose at medium and long range (but not nearly as much as before). I think that Leica just finally implemented something they maybe should have done 25 years ago but were still stuck in the slide mount mentality (which is kind of silly seeing as the film M's were probably mostly used for b&w neg).

So as we say here, don't get your panties all tied up in a knot. The new framelines are better and you won't lose a thing.

I will try the new framelines. I want to get the shutter upgrade and i will definitely test out the new framelines before I send in my camera. I think what makes the old framelines work for me is that I am left-eye dominant and therefore look though the camera with my left eye. If you try this, you will see that your view of the framelines is somewhat restricted to begin with.
