mfphoto Posted May 10, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone have a solution for this? I got a new 1gb Sandisk Ultra card last night which is giving me this error. Works fine in two other cameras. Using the latest firmware on the M8. I have taken it out, put it back in, played with the lock tab, all with no success... thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Advertisement Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Hi mfphoto, Take a look here Attention SD Card Locked Error. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted May 10, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 10, 2007 I've only seen this when the card I use really is locked. One of my 2gb cards (a Corsair card) has a very loose switch and I keep locking the card inadvertently when I insert it in the M8. With my Extreme IIIs and Ultra IIs this hasn't happened yet. You're positive this isn't what is happening with your card? - C

If the card is a little off in its tolerances the lock switch will slide to the locked position when the card is inserted. I have 2 no-name 1G SD cards that are not usable in cameras or in most computers' slots because of thise (they will work with some card readers whose slot is a little wider. The came free with a digital frame, and they've been dedicated to non camera use. The reason I tell you this is because there are a lot of counterfeit Sandisks out there, especially those on eBay and I hope you've not been stuck with a fake. wparsonsgisnet Posted May 10, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 10, 2007 If the card is locking during insertion, you can test this by sticking a bit of tape in the path of the switch to keep it from moving. Just don't let it fall off inside.
wattsy Posted May 10, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 10, 2007 I had this issue once (many months ago) - it is nothing to do with the physical switch on the card. Try reformatting the card using your computer. Put the card back in the camera and reformat again using the M8's format menu option. This did the trick in my case. mfphoto Posted May 10, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted May 10, 2007 thanks for the suggestions. i will try the tape trick, but if that doesn't work i will try formatting it in the computer. wattsy- did you format your card as fat16? fat32? osx journaled? thanks again. wparsonsgisnet Posted May 10, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do NOT format in the computer. Also do not erase (delete) files from the SD card via the computer. The prescribed technique is to copy the files to the computer, put the card back in the digital camera, and Format the card in the camera.

The prescribed technique is to copy the files to the computer, put the card back in the digital camera, and Format the card in the camera. Um...why not? Have people shown this to actually be a problem? I've done this and I have both Transcend and SanDisk cards. No problems at all. I don't think that's causing the lock. It would be hassle to have to remember to format the card each time you put it back in the camera. I've only formatted once - when I first used each card in the M8. I just use Picasa (I know - blasphemy) to import the files and use the smart erase option that erases the photos from the card once they've been successfully transferred. Once they're gone, no need to format.
wattsy Posted May 11, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 11, 2007 Do NOT format in the computer. Also do not erase (delete) files from the SD card via the computer. Bill, if you read what I wrote it was to format the card in the computer and then reformat it again in the camera. This cured the "card locked" error I had many months ago. wattsy Posted May 11, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 11, 2007 wattsy- did you format your card as fat16? fat32? osx journaled? I'm not sure. Most probably FAT16. Definitely not OS X (though I did use a Mac to do the formatting).
Ross Stockwell Posted October 9, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 9, 2007 Try cleaning the contacts on your sd card with some iso-alcohol. Insert it in your camera while the contacts are still a bit damp (with the camera off). If you reader head is dirty this might help clean it off. I had this problem last month - all three of my nearly new cards were seen as locked by my M8. It did not make sense - it may be the reader head in your camera is having a hard time making contact with the card - but that is just my guess. hope this helps Ross
Ross Stockwell Posted October 9, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 9, 2007 BTW -- just to be clear -- I have not had a problem with this SD Lock error since cleaning my SD contacts! Ross
gman Posted October 10, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 10, 2007 I recently had a Kingston 2GB card in the M8 that kept giving me the message that the card was locked, no matter which position the switch was in. The camera would not read it- there were only a few shots on the card- nor would it let me reformat the card. I tried for a while to get it to work, but eventually gave up and returned the card to Kingston which they replaced pronto without a problem. Keep those sales receipts because many cards have a lifetime warranty! Kingston even paid to return the defective card to them via FedEx. jeff

okram Posted October 10, 2007 Share #15 Posted October 10, 2007 This is one of the many little reasons we need the new firmware. Possibly 2.0. Leica should say: here is 2.0. This is the new fw, and everything is fixed now. From A to Z.
Mauribix Posted October 10, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 10, 2007 I had this issue once (many months ago) - it is nothing to do with the physical switch on the card I totally agree with this! the problem shows up to me with MANY MANY MANY sd cards. I had one replaced by Sandisk and one from Kingston but nothing changed. The dealer told me that he knows this issue. Dunno if it's a SD shue problem, but i'm more and more sure about it.(because to solve the problem I just need to remove and insert the card a couple of time...SLOWLY!!) The problem shown up with Sandisk, Kingston, A-Data and Panasonic cards too. I think it's not our fault. Never seen a similar problem with Nikon and Oly! best regards Maurizio
agro Posted October 10, 2007 Share #17 Posted October 10, 2007 I just had this problem 5 minutes ago. Not knowing about this thread I simply deleted everything from the card using computer, than back into the camera. It formated perfectly. Previously it was showing "Card Locked". Cheers Agro
