If there will be enough interest, I am going to organize a trip right after the Leica "One" Challenge through the former GDR, leading to Solms and Wetzlar on Friday. Travelling back home can start from Frankfurt or, together with a trip by train, from Berlin at saturday.

These would be the places for stop overs:

Sunday: Berlin / Potsdam

Monday: Wittenberg (Martin Luther), Wörlitz (UNESCO World Heritage landscape park), Dessau (Bauhaus)

Tuesday: Wolfen (former Agfa / ORWO), Leipzig, Freyburg ("Rotkäppchen"- tradit. sparkling wine factory)

Wendsday: Jena (Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik, Planetarium, Optic museum), Weimar (Goethe & Co), Gotha (Origin of the Royal British Family: Prince Albert grew up here. The Royals changed their name from "Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha" during WW I in "Windsor".

In the evening Films and storage cards will be collected to be developed / printed at request in Eisenach at the CeWe laboratory over night.

Tuesday: Eisenach (UNESCO World Heritage "Wartburg", Exhibition "800 years St. Elizabeth", Automobile Museum in the first BMW production plant)

Friday: LEICA Solms, Wetzlar

Please take this as a first, rough suggestion. I am free for further ideas.

I have asked Olly from the Leica Academy for support. Up to now, the trip will take place with at least 12 persons, then the roughly calculated price will be around 1700E per person

Would be nice to get your feed back in this thread or as PN.

Best regards

Friedhelm

As a TV journalist I worked in most parts of this area for years. I am shure we will get some doors opend which a normal tourist won´t. Look in the archive for the Eisenach and Gotha Meetings I organised last year in January and August.

Looks like an interesting place, Ron, but like many of us I suspect, I would not have the time to do anything other than the Challenge.

Can't see Mrs B going round an old warehouse full of old cars either, which is a consideration :)

Friedhelm,

what a wonderful idea with such a rich program. I can highly recommend your organization-skills, you always suggest such amazing locations to visit.

This trip is nearly a "must" for Germany visitors. Unfortunately i have not the time and money to join the whole trip but would maybe come

to Eisenach for some hours (if this would be possible and you are not "overbooked").

Good luck!

Ronald

p.s. As a TV man and local, Friedhelm is really a "door opener", he knows all the gate-keepers of the finest locations, a "standard" tourist would never find access to!

What is everyone's view on hotel cost? And location? Are we all aiming for the same hotel? The top Trip Advisor (my bible in such matters) is the Swisshotel on Ku'damm - av price/room Euro 136 (£97). Alternatively there's Ku'damm 101 at Euro 138, or a Novotel Berlin mitte @ Euro 109.

Local opinions are needed bearing in mind that tastes differ - even for a 2 night break.
