Hi here are my first photos with the Leica Summilux D 25mm f/1.4 ASPH which arrived the other day from Japan. The new lens is attached to my Digilux-3 (D3).

L875 f 1.4 1/250 ISO 100

L824 f 1.6 1/320 ISO 100

L830 f 1.4 1/1300 ISO 100

L841 f 1.4 1/2000 ISO 400

L865 f 3.2 1/1600 ISO 100

L853 f 5.6 1/100 ISO 200

L855 f 1.4 1/640 ISO 200

L869 f 1.4 1/500 ISO 400

L878 f 1.4 1/640 ISO 100

The purpose of the shots was to simply play with the lens and test sharpness and DOF a bit. Admittedly not very scientific or comparative shooting. I am happy with lens, it seems like a very nice piece of equipment only the user still has to learn how to use it properly. Sorry about the pdfs it allowed me to keep the size bigger plus I do not know yet how to keep the size of JPEG small without losing too much details (i.e. I do not know my way around graphic file formats just yet). Any advice appreciated.

Regards, Michael

Like yourself I am just learning how to use this wonderful lens. Here is my first posting of a photo using it at night handheld with the Olympus E-1. I think they are going to make a great combination but that lens to me is very special, pricey for me, yes but worth it and opens a whole new realm of photograpy. Comments always welcome.

Hi Bruce, good shot - especially hand-held. Low light conditions that's something I still have to test. Very sharp I guess this would have been f 1.4? It is a great lens I think. I read somewhere that Leica is not distributing this lens only Panasonic. I wonder why? It seems like a very good lens. Maybe I will ask Leica Germany. I wonder what the Leica macro lens f 2.0 will be like. I am curious whether you use a Zuiko tele-lens or whether you are waiting for the Leica 14-150mm. Thanks for sharing, Michael

Hello Michael....yes this was shot at f1.4 and yes I have both the 14-54 and 50-200 Zuiko lenses, they are very good lenses also but both stop at f2.8 and I cannot afford the extra cost for the f2 Zuiko's. I really like being able to get open to 1.4, lots of fun and no flash required !

Apologies gents,

here are my first attempts with the Summilux 25mm f/1.4 lens again. This time as Jpegs as I have now (Eureka!) acquired the necessary knowledge of Elements 4 to reduce the file size (it was actually kind of obvious - hmm 'Save for Web' :o ). A kind soul hinted at the fact that pdfs was not the way to go - thank you! ;) Low light testing and more DOF trials to follow at some point.

Hey Bill, excellent shots !

The boy great eye shot & smile (shirt may detract a bit), the next is a good character shot - cool & stylish, and the last one is very sharp & great detail. I wonder what f-stops you used for most shots - mostly wide open f1.4 or down to 2.8/4.0? I find people a lot harder to shoot as the timing has to be perfect to capture the right moment. Enjoyed the pics - and yes, we do have a nice piece of equipment with that lens. :) Looking forward to more photos. Thanks for sharing, Michael

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are my first 2 pics with this lens... They were shoot in raw, iso 400 @ f1.4. I felt in love with this lens right after opening the box. :-)) R

Hi Ricardo, nice shots - the lens certainly is sharp. I only started to really appreciate this quality lens when I noticed the flexibility it gave me during shooting - a whole new degree of creative opportunities without having to reach for a tripod or FL50 flash. Beautiful dogs. Nice, natural colors in the pics. Enjoy.

Hello Michael,

Your picture of the cat really shows how sharp this lens can be when used properly, impressive shot! The more I use it the more I like it; I had to pay 1050 usd for it but no regrets so far, in fact I hope Leica will release maybe a 35mm or 50mm summilux version for portraits :-)) Far better than any R lens with adapter in my humble opinion.

Regards,

Ricardo

Hello Ricardo, thanks. I hope more people will share photos of their experiences. I hope that the other lenses to be released will be of similar quality & performance. I am hoping to acquire the 150mm and the f2.0 macro when available. The Summilux was only US$950 direct from Japan. I just tried to order the 468MRC2 manfrotto ballhead from B&H in the US but they wanted an image of my credit card uploaded (muy chistoso - in their dreams - :p ). The hunt continues. Next I will test the lens in low light & night conditions. I am looking forward to more of your images.

Regards, Michael
