Erik_A Posted March 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Check out wedding photographer Jeff Ascough's blog for updates on the full frame auto-focus digital rangefinder and 35mm 1.2 lens that he is testing and Tweeted about today (03-29-10). I can't wait to find out more info on this! Jeff Ascough's Blog 1.) Week 2 with the new stealth camera. I am under NDA at the moment as to who makes it but I can tell you that it is a brand new rangefinder. 2.) I am using the standard 35 1.2 lens but there are two others on the way to test. 3.) Ok - I can't tell you everything but it is full frame, magnesium alloy electronic shutter, and the AF is very good 4.) I have some testing to do tomorrow and then I will ask to see if I can blog about it. I doubt I will be able to use images.

nhabedi Posted March 29, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 29, 2010 Sorry if this has been posted already: Olympus and Panasonic rumors Blog Archive Jeff Ascough is testing a new rangefinder…MicroFourThirds or not? I guess many people on this forum know Ascough. He has used film Ms and he has an M8 for personal work, so he certainly knows what a "rangefinder" is. So, if he says he's testing a rangefinder, that could be something interesting. He's usually affiliated with Canon, BTW...

Sorry for the OT question - but does anyone know how to get the film-like frames Jeff uses for his blog images ? I love them. Is there any way of getting these for lightroom including cropped images ?? Would really appreciate any tips on this. M
ho_co Posted March 29, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 29, 2010 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/120662-new-ff-af-digital-rangefinder-35mm.html But that post's link doesn't bring up the information quoted; that post says the camera is full-frame instead of speculating on whether it might be Micro Four Thirds, as yours does. But I was unaware that Panasonic was supposedly working on a rangefinder, as stated by your source. Could it be that your link just uses the word 'rangefinder' to mean anything without a reflex mirror? Thanks for the post.

The fact that he's testing a "rangefinder" was also mentioned here, but not with all those details (lens, material, full frame, etc.).

Stan Raucher Posted March 30, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 30, 2010 It would be great if this turned out to be a digital version of the Contax G2 that uses the same wonderful Zeiss lenses. Stan
andybarton Posted March 30, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 30, 2010 Maybe it's me just being thick, but can someone tell me what an "auto-focus rangefinder" actually is? Or how it might work? The rangefinder is used to focus the image and is a visual device so that one can see when the image is in focus. It is completely un-necessary if there is auto-focus added to the camera. It seems to me that what we are talking about is just another digital camera.
j_lir Posted March 30, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 30, 2010 hmmm. 35 1.2 exists...√ AF rangefinder? conty g2D? hmmm... the closeness to april 1st is what gets me. im happy with my m's, i'd love some competition to get the price down however;)
nhabedi Posted March 30, 2010 Share #20 Posted March 30, 2010 Maybe it's me just being thick, but can someone tell me what an "auto-focus rangefinder" actually is? Or how it might work? The rangefinder is used to focus the image and is a visual device so that one can see when the image is in focus. It is completely un-necessary if there is auto-focus added to the camera. You've never seen cameras where you can choose between manual and automatic focus? It is certainly not inconceivable that this new camera has a rangefinder for manual focus but also offers AF as an option. Besides, the Contax G series cameras were called "rangefinders" by many people although they had AF. It seems to me that what we are talking about is just another digital camera. I still think it is very likely that this is an April fool's prank. But if it is not, keep in mind that Ascough is a pro who has worked with Ms a lot in the past and still uses an M8 for personal stuff sometimes. I'd assume that he wouldn't call it a rangefinder if it were "just another digital camera".
