philipus Posted March 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone I'll be in London next weekend and expect to have a few hours to kill on the Saturday. Are there any shops (or perhaps camera fairs even) in the central parts which may have interesting used Leica gear? I'm particularly interested in checking out the R series, comparing the viewfinders in particular, but also in screwmount lenses. Many thanks in advance Philip
Advertisement Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Hi philipus, Take a look here London shops with used Leica equipment?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gabriel Posted March 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 20, 2014 The best stores for second-hand Leica in London are Red Dot, Aperture, Richard Caplan and RJ Lewis in order of stock availability. All are Leica official dealers with the exception of Aperture. Red Dot will have the best stock of new equipment as well as an extensive selection of second user.. None are open Sundays. Red Dot is only open on alternate Saturdays, the rest have varied Saturday opening hours. Your best bet is to look at the above dealers websites for opening hours. All are in central London. Enjoy your visit
LocalHero1953 Posted March 20, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 20, 2014 May be worth a look at London Camera Exchange as well. And check MW Classic online - you can probably visit them by appointment if their long stock list has anything of interest to you.
pgk Posted March 21, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 21, 2014 I was in London recently and had a most pleasant walk down into the centre from Finchley and then around town. I visited Leica in Mayfair where my M9 was given a quick sensor clean (the guy was busy but gave the camera a quick clean out when I explained that it was mucky and I'd left my sensor cleaning brush at home - very helpful and pleasant), then pottered over to Richard Caplan where they had good used stock and were helpful, chatty and pleasant. My walk wended along eastwards and en route I popped into LCE Strand (not that much but some Leica gear) up and past R G Lewis (always pleasant there and fair amount of stock too - I worked for them when a student in the early '80s) and then over to Red Dot Cameras whom I've only ever talked to on the 'phone and dealt with by post. They were also very pleasant and helpful and had an extensive amount of stock too - Red Dot are just a little bit out on a limb compared to the others and require a special effort to go and see but its well worth doing IF they are open on the Saturday you visit on. After all that I didn't actually buy anything (despite this everyone in the shops was very pleasant and prepared to chat) but I did take a few pix along the way. It was surprisingly warm for March and the walk was a long one (at least on concrete which I'm not used to). So all-in-all I'd say that you can't go too far wrong popping into any of these dealers but be warned that they are a fair distance apart.
earleygallery Posted March 21, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 21, 2014 In addition to the above, if you have time and are brave enough to venture south of the river, there's also Croydon Photo Centre in Croydon. This used to be a Leica dealer but now just deal in s/h gear. They have much more in stock than is listed on their website. Whatever you do, DON'T bother with Nicholas Camera in Camden. That will be a wasted effort.
philipus Posted March 23, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted March 23, 2014 This is great, thank you for the suggestions, some concerning shops I wasn't aware of. Paul, your walk is inspiring and I hope to do something similar. With luck I will have time to visit Croydon too which is a dealer I've been curious about. I've read quite bad things about Nicolas Camera (and seem to remember asking about them once too). I'll focus on other dealers. I'll check in particular if Red Dot is open. I've ordered from them a few times and always been very happy with the service, including exceptionally fast shipping to The Hague. Has anyone visited the new Leica store in the Burlington arcade? Best and thanks again Philip
pgk Posted March 23, 2014 Share #7 Posted March 23, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone visited the new Leica store in the Burlington arcade? I walked past it (the arcade is fun to walk through anyway) - nice stuff in the window and inside but not sure that there was much different from Leica Mayfair that I could see. gabriel Posted March 23, 2014 Share #8 Posted March 23, 2014 The Leica shop in the Burlington Arcade and the Leica store in Mayfair only sell new equipment with ex demo sometimes available. The Leica Store offers free sensor cleaning on site.

Hi Pete That's an excellent idea. I would love to meet up with anyone who's got the time and happen to be around. I'll be in the centre this Saturday, walking around after lunch. Red Dot is unfortunately closed so I'll be in the area below (and as much as I would wish to visit Croydon Photo Center I won't have time this weekend unfortunately). Is there a Leica-friendly pub where one could meet in the late afternoon, perhaps? Best, looking forward to meeting whomever is able to join Philip Welcome, dear visitor! farnz Posted March 26, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 26, 2014 Philip, That's great news and I'm happy to meet up this Saturday afternoon. I suggest upstairs at The Chandos pub, which is just off Trafalgar Square and beside St Martin in the Fields church so it's nice and central. Shall we say 6pm or would you prefer earlier or later? (I've pm'ed you my mobile number.) I'll send a few pm's to see if some others are interested. Edit: I've started a thread in the Events and Member's Meetings subforum. Pete. philipus Posted March 26, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted March 26, 2014 Wonderful, thanks Pete, also for starting the other thread. I've pm'd you my mobile number too. 5pm would suit me a bit better so I'll be there then and others can join when it suits. Looking forward to this a lot. farnz Posted March 26, 2014 Share #14 Posted March 26, 2014 No problem, Philip, 6 was only a guess - let's make it 5pm then. Pete.
marknorton Posted March 26, 2014 Share #15 Posted March 26, 2014 Has anyone visited the new Leica store in the Burlington arcade? The shop in Burlington Arcade started life as a pop-up shop before last Christmas and now caters to the non-M user. My one experience of buying something there told me the staff are completely clueless.
