luigi bertolotti Posted March 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Summarit 75 is the first new lens I bought for my M8, 3 years ago, and by far the tele I've used most: in these days I noticed that a very little play is showing, between the lens group and the focusing barrel: little, indeed, but when lens is extended, one undoubtly feels it, even if not when you operate the lens in normal usage (and IQ is completely un-impacted, at the moment) : has someone else observed this ? I'm a little annoyed... I have >50 years old lenses with complex and heavy construction (Summarex 85, Telyt 200...) that are still solid as rocks... the only play I am accustomed is the typical f stop ring "a bit over wide open and full closed" which hasn't any impact, but a lens assembly that, potentially, goes a bit decentered/tilted is a thing I don't like... Advertisement Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Hi luigi bertolotti, Take a look here Summarit 75, a little problem. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vla Posted March 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 8, 2010 luigi, sorry to hear that. i have the same lens for about a year and have not noticed that kind of problem. actually it feels incredibly well built, considerably better than my second-hand 35mm summicron (built somewhere around 2005). on the summarit f-stop is precise and does not have any play at all. focusing is smooth, resistance perfectly uniform across the entire focusing range. i'd guess this is something CS should take care of ... markus
menos I M6 Posted March 9, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 9, 2010 Please correct me, if I am wrong, but there seems to be a slight play in several Leica lenses focus assembly, which - according to CLA history - is negated by the type and condition of grease in the focus assembly. I have a second hand 50 Lux ASPH and 35 Cron ASPH and both have the slight play, one can feel with the fingers touching both assembly groups and slightly moving the front group. I have seen no impact on image sharpness or function so far. I forgot somewhen about it and plan to ship them for CLA later.
jaapv Posted March 9, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2010 I have several lenses that do this. It does not imapct image quality and does not seem to change. So I tend to forget about it.
tobey bilek Posted March 9, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 9, 2010 Sorry to say they don`t make `em like they used to. Craftsmanship in the 50 `s and 60`s was superb. Today it what they can get away with. But I must say it was 50% better than Japanese decades ago, today it is 1000% better. The new Nikon glass has a lot of plastic in it and it gets worse all the time. Construction robustness was one of the things they gave up to make the cheaper Summarit line. The other side of the coin is the the optics are better now if you consider high resolution the judging criteria.
jaapv Posted March 9, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 9, 2010 Umm - one of the lenses that does this was built in 1962 - and I bought it unused and factory new three years ago...
luigi bertolotti Posted March 9, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted March 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I'm rather relieved...for the moment I do nothing... I hope it doesn't become more significant... lens is still perfect as IQ: yesterday I checked some other lenses of mine... I notice a similar play in my very old Summilux 35 of 1960... "tube" lenses like Elmars 90 and 135s are still perfect (with variations in focusing smoothness, but no "axial" play, and even their unscrewable lens groups are absolutely stable when screwed onto... jaapv Posted March 9, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 9, 2010 I have a tele-Elmar 135 that does it.
k-hawinkler Posted March 24, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 24, 2010 I have a tele-Elmar 135 that does it. That's a relief. My 135 TE has some slight play in the focusing barrel as well. I can unscrew the lens head and it is rock solid. Wide open at close focus distance of 1.5 m my 135 TE seems to front focus by about 2 cm but otherwise seems to be on the mark. I wonder whether it needs adjustment? K-H.
jaapv Posted March 24, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 24, 2010 This is a very difficult lens to adjust, as it is not shimmed. The only way to do that is to rotate the optical cell mount relative to the helicoid, and then counterrotate the focus ring assembly to straighten it out. Will van Manen just did mine. wda Posted March 25, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 25, 2010 Luigi, I have the same 75mm lens as you, but rather younger (1 year). It is one of my favorite lenses and, so far, retains excellent build quality.

Thanks for the info. I just received a 135TE back from a CLA and it is still front focusing 1-2cm. It was 2-3 before. It is clean and smooth now, and I think I am just going to live with the front focus for now.
fernando.salazar Posted April 5, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 5, 2010 Luigi, half a year ago I had the same problem with the Summarit 75 which I bought early 2009. The dealer sent the lens to Solms and the problem was fixed in two weeks. Since then the mechanic of the lens is working without any problem.
