Good evening,

as discussed earlier in this Bar, the idea came up to have a photographic competition based on Kodachrome film. Since I'm not sure about using the Kodachrome trademark, I will use the name KC-Challenge at least as a working title.

My best thanks to Bill for borrowing the proven name and rules of other Challenges as well as evaluation tools. Your support is very much appreciated.

I would like to ask, whether anyone is seeing a flaw in the rules or time lines below. Feedback would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Stefan

Rules for the KC Challenge (final draft)

The KC Challenge will run once only to pay tribute to 74 years of the Kodachrome Slide film.

It is open to all Leica User Forum members.

In order to participate you must shoot one roll of Kodachrome film on a given weekend. Any Leica camera or lens can be used, but at least one of the two must be a “Leica”.

The theme for this challenge is “Red and yellow” for the trademark colours of Kodachrome.

Shooting will start on Friday, 31st July 2009 at 3pm (15:00) your local time. The exposed roll must be in the postbox by Sunday, 2nd August 2009 at 8:15pm (20:15) your local time latest.

The thread will be open for postings but NOT for voting eight weeks after the shooting weekend to allow all entries to be posted before voting starts. Your entries are not anonymous; feel free to post camera, lens and film details (in case someone uses an old roll of Kodachrome 25 or 200).

Participants have until 27th September 2009 to:

  • Select their favourite single slide representing the theme “Red and Yellow”
  • Scan that image. Digital manipulation of the image is restricted to cropping/resizing and use of levels, hue/saturation or similar to improve colour rendition and/or contrast. Dodging, burning, desaturation, toning and tinting are also allowed. Addition or subtraction of image elements (people, sky, etc) are NOT allowed.
  • Size that image ready for posting to the Forum, with the longest side not greater than 700 pixels (in order to avoid excessive download times that may discourage voting).
  • Post this image in the week between 27th September 2009 and 4th October 2009.

Voting will then be opened and will be possible for one week (4th October to 11th October 2009). Please observe these points for valid voting:

  • Three points for best, two points for second and one point for third.
  • One vote per member
  • No vote for your own image
  • All three votes (best, second and third) must be given to three different images.

To summarize the time lines:

Shooting starts Friday, 31st July 2009 at 3pm (15:00) your local time.

The exposed roll must be in a postbox by Sunday, 2nd August 2009 at 8:15pm (20:15) your local time.

Posting starts Sunday 27th September 2009 and ends Sunday 4th October 2009

Voting starts Sunday 4th October and ends Sunday 11th October 2009, when the winner will be declared.

The winner gets the right to declare a slide film, which, in his view, is the best successor of Kodachrome, and whether we should make a new Challenge based on this slide film.

Sounds like a good way to honour Kodachrome but I am not sure about the title-KC Challenge as they are my initials. I don't see any problems with The Kodachrome Challenge. You might even get Kodak behind it for it is after all thier legacy and they might see it as a fitting tribute for a magnificent film

Hi Kenneth.

I will simply ask Kodak, whether they have an issue with this. If they are in, they are in, if not, we will find a different name. After all, I found typing "L-camera-forum" is even faster compared to "Leica-camera-forum". ;)

Kind regards

Stefan

Great idea, Stefan

Will you be taking part then, Kenneth?

You know better than to ask Andy, but if you are in my area I have just printed some Ilford Pan-F that I would appreciate you comments on

If I'm in your area, I will happily scan your eligible Kodachrome so that you can submit

I will also look forward to your b&w prints too

Thank you- let me know if you want that roll of Kodachrome 64?

Nice idea, even have a roll or two in the fridge, and a PK mailer. I probably will not shoot the roll of Double-8 KA-459 though.

But the time-constraint is a bit rigid, especially during Summer Vacation season.

I like the idea except for these limitations.

3 p.m. is a rather late start. In my part of the world, this gives me only 3 hours of suitable light. Why not devote the entire calendar day? Why not a week beginning and ending at very specific times?

Also, I send my Kodachrome to Dwayne's once a month a dozen (or more) rolls at a time (which is the minimum rate I shoot it). This means if I don't happen to have a dozen rolls to send off on 2 August, the film just ain't going out.

How do you propose to verify these times and dates anyhow?

How did you decide on the time constraints? They seem rather arbitrary. In any case, that time frame would make it logistically nearly impossible for me to participate. :(

Hello JBA,

I'm happy to relax the starting time, for example to Friday at noon, if this helps. The finishing time is Set In Stone. :) Observant members of the bar might guess, how this time was set. ;) I guess nobody in the world will have much fun with a 64ASA film after 8pm this time of the year anyhow....

Since two years, I'm taking part in the One Challenge, where we have only two hours of shooting (some participants seem to follow the original 'one hour' rule even). In my experience, this restriction is pushing creativity very much. It is actually a very good photographic exercise (and also lots of fun). :)

Kind regards

Stefan

Shooting starts Friday at noon now and ends Sunday evening - this gives two and a half days of shooting now.

Regardless, if amateur or professional photographer - I would assume during the week most of us have other duties anhyow?

I hope you can make it :)

I have no problem shooting during that time, but I can guarantee the film is not going to be in the post on a Sunday no matter what.

The KC Challenge will run once only to pay tribute to 74 years of the Kodachrome Slide film.

You are a little early, most suppliers are getting a shipment of fresh Kodachrome on or about the 20th of July, you should give people the chance to order more film.

And, you are a little late to the party, there are hundreds of us making images for the 75th anniversary of the film's actual use in 2010...:-)

This has been going on for years:

Where have you been...:-)

Sorry, if the film is back in the shops on 20th and the Challenge starts on 31st, shouldn't this leave eleven days to buy a film or get it shipped?

Nice idea to have a Kodachrome project :)

Stefan
