I prepared an image - 900 wide -sRGB- 325 kB. I uploaded and it became so soft I deleted it again. No way could I get it to display properly. What is the forum software doing to my file???

325kb is probably too large, so there's something in the software that's reducing it in size.

Actually 390kB and 960x960 is the largest size - so something seems to be amiss! I haven't noticed any problems uploading - but my files are much smaller than 325kB.

I've just uploaded a 71KB sRGB png image that's 960 pixels wide to the "London - Spring in the air meet" thread and dark speckled noise has appeared in the Red channel. The noise is not nearly as visible in the original png file viewed in Photoshop or Internet Explorer.

I didn't know that. Thanks Jaap. I had assumed that the file size criterion would be the same as for the normal photo forum uploads.

Reducing files to the guideline size makes them soft. All of mine appear soft and are not that way off this forum.

The strange thing however is that after reducing them to guideline size there is still something in between that makes them look worse on the forum than the original upload; sometimes A LOT worse

There was some news or a notice somewhere about your own galleries having images a bit bigger than in the photoe forums. Its written somewhere. Maybe ask a mod:p.

Jaap I reckon you are just lucky. At one point I used to get significant colour shift in stuff I uploaded, and one day only about a quarter of the file size uploaded so I had a grainy 'olde worldee' look with scratches and fading. I used to put it down to my connection, and the l camera attachment uploader assuming it had the file complete.

Andy - I have noticed on this and other photo forums that some people are able to get much crisper, sharper pictures than I can. I assume they have some clever tweaks they use. As a computer novice I admire such skill but am too long in the tooth to worry too much. Good luck to them.

It just happened to me: I uploaded some pics to the photo forum. They became so disappointing that I deleted them right away. I then compressed the jpegs some more, and they became quite acceptable.

 

I hope that the powers that be don't mind if I upload a sample at different sizes.

 

Here goes - this one is compressed to a quality quotient of 97%, yielding an image size of 294.6KB. It shows the effect (of becoming blurred) quite nicely.

 

After adding the image, the forum appears to be keeping a copy with a size of 67.3KB.

.. Here's the next one. Compressed to a quality of 95%, yielding a jpeg image of 222.8KB.

 

Note that the manage attachments dialog window explicitly states a limit of 244.1KB for jpeg images.

 

The forum holds a copy of the image which is exactly the size of the image I uploaded.

I get my files as close to the limit as possible.

Strangely enough, when I compress my image using the GIMP to a size of some 67.7KB (with a quality of 57%), my image still looks better than the 97% one which is compressed by the forum.

 

Wonder upon wonder.

 

Lesson learned: Compress your image to an original size of less than 244.1KB lest the forum does it for you and to you.

Yes, quite. There's a heavy penalty on exceeding the stated limit even by a modest amount.

 

I wonder if it would be worthwile to make a short version of this thread a sticky? I have been wondering for quite some time why the forum of Leica users - who are so proud of their sharp lenses - sports such an inordinate number of blurry pictures.

I can't say I've noticed an issue myself, nor do I know how many people try to upload images outside the rules. When I have tried to do so, by mistake, I have received a message that the file size is too large.

This is a bit strange: I did not see any messages. The forum silently shrunk my pictures. Ah, well, now I know why.
