Here's a quick and dirty run through, using Photoshop CS3

Here's the image I want to upload.

It's too large for the forum software, so I need to reduce it in size

The box shows the current size of the image, in pixels

I want to change it to 800 max height (or 960 wide if it's landscape)

So, this shrinks down the image to the right size (note that Photoshop retains the zoom when the image is reduced in dimension - it will be larger than this when displayed)

Next we want to Save As and in the right location on your Hard Drive) Note also that the image has already been assigned the sRGB profile so that it displays properly on non colour managed browsers, such as Internet Explorer

I will save this one in my "2008 jpgs" folder, and give it an appropriate name

The next box shows the size in kb of the file, for a given jpg quality. Knock back the quality slider until the kb size is as close to, but not over, 240kb

Job done.

You can now upload the finished article to your post. Like this.

Hope this helps.

I use Russell Browns services 1.9.4 with photoshop. A brilliantly useful piece of free software. The Russell Brown Show

Andy,

Great work! A useful video, and elegantly presented.

I am partial to the Save for Web option in place of Save As. With save for web, I can enter in the desired file size, and hit the forum max of 241.1kb on the nose.:)

I only wish that when the save for web command is included in an action, that it saved the output size, i.e. 241.1kb; currently it saves the quality setting used to achieve that size of the photo that you were working with when you created the action. This means that subsequent photos run through the action are either greater or lesser than 241.1kb.
