New macro converter with other lenses?

In another thread, Jono posted an image taken with his Leica T, macro converter and Noctillux, and this got me thinking.

While the MEM-90 is well written up as a compact lens, without the macro adapter, what are its strengths? More critically, is it really that much better at macro photography with the T than any other Leica M mount lens and the macro adapter?

Have others experimented with this set up? We're breaking new ground here, I suspect, as the new MEM-90mm (more particularly with the new adapter) is the first M lens designed purely for the M(240) which doesn't work with rangefinder only M cameras - for them, you need the earlier version of the adapter with the goggles.

I might just get the adapter and have a play - my question will be, what magnifications will be achievable with the Leica T, the M adapter, and new macro adapter and various M lenses. Does anyone know how to do the maths on this?

Cheers

John

It's a fantastically sharp lens - really one of the sharpest, I guess 90s are pretty easy to make, especially if they're relatively slow.

It is better than other M mount lenses with the adapter - partly from a practical point of view in that you can quickly focus to infinity without removing the adapter (just by collapsing the lens).

Partly because it is designed to perform as well with an extension tube (which of course the other M lenses aren't).

Partly because the focusing range with the adapter (both extended and collapsed) seems to be greater than it is with most other lenses.

Well, obviously it works fine on pre-M(240) cameras without the adapter. It's only the macro adapter which is designed for the M240 alone (just like the R adapter was).

Hi John

I've used the adapter with several lenses - notably the noctilux, the 75 'cron, 50 'lux and 35 summarit. You can focus much closer with wider angle lenses (I think because they're less telecentric), but I haven't worked out whether this results in more magnification or not (lazy I'm afraid).

The adapter is a lot of fun - both with the T and with the M, it's beautifully made and stacks happily on the M to T adapter with no movement.

I will leave you the pleasure of working out closest focusing for each different lens (I suspect that the maths would be really complex, and would require measurements which aren't readily available).

FWIW, and coincidentally, I took this last night with the M adapter and the 50 summilux wide open.

Don't forget folks that the focal length and subject distance are not just about magnification.

The role of perspective is often forgotten but crucial in macro photography. At about 15 cm one gets the most natural perspective using a 135 mm lens, for instance.

Guest ww@lt
Could someone kindly advice what is the nearest distance the lux 50 can focus with the adapter. As without that the nearest is 0.7m based on specification.

Thanks.

1/b + 1/g = 1/f

b = Distance from optical Center of Lens to Film/Sensod

g = Distance from optical Center of the lens to subject

f = focal length of lens

Hello,

here some experiences with my New M240.

I made some tests last weekend in the Benrath's palace garden near Düsseldorf, Germany.

1st I used an M240 with a Summicron-R 1:2/50 together with th enew R Adapter and Elpro 2 that I own since the 80th.

2nd I used http://www.novoflex.com/de/produkte/objektiv-adapter/zwischenringsatz-leica-m/ with my M 2.3.12 90mm f/2 ASPH Apo-Summicron-M.

3rd I used the Novoflex converter together with my Vario-Elmar-R 1:4,5 / 75 - 200 and the Elpro.

Here some results. The extreme ones are the 200. Do not look at the exif data because I did not change and it is not nit possible in the camera itself.
