Leica R to M adapter

Hello folks,

Is there somebody who can explain me the difference (besides the name) between this new adapter and the existing ones from ex. Kipon, rugfit, novoflex, etc... ?

Thanks in advance,

Steph

You can look at the link below that will explain about the new Leica R to M adapter:

Leica Camera AG - Photography - NEW ADAPTER MAKES R-LENSES USEABLE WITH NEW LEICA M

According to Leica, with the upcoming Leica M:

"can access a list of 20 dedicated profiles - including calibrated imaging workflows and EXIF lens recognition - for a range of R-Lenses covering wide-angle, standard, telephoto, zoom and macro lenses".

If you decide to get the new Leica M and want to use R lenses on the camera, I would say that it would be worth the investment in the new R to M adapter rather than a different adapter just for what is mentioned above.

Have no idea what those other adapters do, but the Leica new M adapter is 6 bot coded allowing one to then manually selected from a menu list of 20-21 R lenses.

I have a LEM/LER adapter which is a simple adapter, but a very well made one. It is not cheap.

Check for other threads on this Leica adapter as many posts have been recorded since 17 September 2012. I posted photos and thoughts on the adapter around 17-20 September.

Hello naturephoto1 and algrove,

Yes indeed I ordered the new Leica M :-) and the adapter, but I was thinking why do I have to pay so much while my (official) Leica dealer told me there was no electronic information passing through the ring. Bad point for them :-(

Thanks for your replies. These are very usefull for me. I missed this information and will of course keep the leica adapter!!!

Regards,

StephaneH

It should be possible to diy the 6-bit code onto a M to R adaptor. I have the Novoflex adaptor and once I know the 6 bit code, I will try it, assuming I can get hold of a Leica M early next year!

The new adapater code is now well known. I also posted a shot of it at Photokina showing the code. Don't remember what the code is.

I don't see any reason for this Leica adapter. If I have too choose from the list of lenses anyway, what does the adapter do?

Can I choose the lenses only with this adapter, if yes, why?

One more question, I did not find any answer jet:

does the adapter have a tripod mount or not??

Thanks for any help.

The adapter is coded so it should automatically bring up the right menu. I'm guessing you can still manually select lenses but maybe not?

As for a tripod mount, there will be one on the camera. If you are mounting a very heavy lens it should have a tripod mount on the lens. No need for one on the adapter.

Yes the R to M adapter has a removable tripod mount. But, it does not rotate, and it is designed for the camera and lens to be used in the horizontal (landscape) orientation. I have made a suggestion to Justin Stailey of Leica USA in person that it may be in Leica's best interest to either make a rotating collar for the adapter or make 2 different ones. One with a rotating collar and one without. If Leica will not do this then we may have to have a machine shop make up or find an after market rotating collar to allow using the camera with larger and heavier lenses (such as the 180mm f 3.4 Apo, 100mm Apo, and the zoom lenses like the 80-200 f4) in both the horizontal and vertical (portrait) orientations.

thanks Rich,

in that case the adapter from Novoflex would be of interest in combination with the separate offered tripod collar.

To code the adapter should not be a problem!

any ideas?

I am not sure how easy it would be and what would be entailed for the coding of a Novoflex adapter that will be read by the new M 240 camera and allow accessing the selection of the lens in use.

At present, I have a Fuji X-E1 camera and am using my R lenses on this camera by way of this Novoflex adapter:

Novoflex Adapter for Leica R Mount Lenses to Fujifilm FUX/LER

I also have the appropriate rotating Novoflex collar:

Novoflex TRIPOD MOUNT FOR MFT ADAPTERS ASTAT-MFT B&H Photo Video

The rotating collar allows rotating the camera and lens around in all orientations. But, the incorporated Arca Swiss Type QR plate will not work with the Really Right Stuff QR clamps. The plate for the Novoflex is too narrow. It will work with all of my screw type clamps that I have from Kirk Enterprises, ProMediaGear, and Markins as well as some much older Really Right Stuff, (and I believe older Wimberley clamp- this one I have not checked, but it should work).

This is the Leica R lens to M adapter from Novoflex:

Novoflex Lens Adapter Leica-R to Leica-M Body LEM/LER B&H Photo

I am not sure if the lens Novoflex rotating collar that I have will fit the Novoflex Leica R lens to M adapter.

The adapter does not pass any info through the ring. The coding on the ring makes the menu offer the limited selection of some R lenses available for you to manually select. I believe they don't show without the adapter ( M only users would not see the extra lenses).

For the list see the brochure on Leica's site

A couple of points worth considering are that the R lens selection in the new M is limited so if you don't have any of the lenses (mostly the more expensive ones) then the EXIF data, lens corrections arn't of any value. Secondly, if the normal run of things is maintained its only a matter of time before third part manufactures start to offer coded, right frame lines and may be rotating tripod mounts at far less than Leica will be asking.

Not withstanding the tripod mount then if you don't have any (or perhaps one or two) of the listed lenses then a cheap LR/LM adaptor will work just as well!

Also. keep in mind that with the long fixed and zoom R lenses, one can rotate the lens with camera on it so for me a rotating adapter from Leica is redundant.

But, then for those that do not use those R lenses that can rotate on their own, a rotating Leica adapter would be worthwhile. Yes it has a removable tripod mount on the adapter which I photographed and mentioned here in posts around 18-20 September while at Photokina.

at Dierk- So how do accomplished precise focus with the M9?

For myself, I would find a rotating collar useful for my 100mm f2,8 Macro Apo Elmarit, 180mm f3.4 Apo Telyt, 80-200mm f4 Vario Elmar, 70-210 f4 Vario Elmar, and possibly for my 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC lenses.
