Rick Posted June 27, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2011 My favorite line from Dr. Kaufmann: Q: With that, might we expect that Leica cater developments more towards what the consumers preferences? Dr. Kaufmann: Henry Ford once said that "if I were to ask my customers what they want to have, they would have asked for a better horse.":D
rosuna Posted June 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 28, 2011 When asked for the M10, Dr. Kaufmann points to Photokina 2012 to see something. So, there are two possibilities: 1, In Photokina 2012 Leica will show two cameras, the new EVIL and the new M10; or 2, the new EVIL is the new M10, or said in another way, the new EVIL camera has some kind of modified M mount. mjh Posted June 28, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 28, 2011 It wouldn’t make sense to use the M mount for a new EVIL system. Also I doubt the new system will have anything to do with the M10. The M is 36 x 24 mm while the new system is said to get a sensor of APS-C dimensions at least – APS-C wouldn’t even be an option if this was in any way related to the M10. So we might hear about two new cameras next photokina, but when Dr. Kaufmann referred to photokina 2012 I think he only wanted to dispel any ideas the M10 could be introduced even earlier than that. StephenPatterson Posted June 28, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 28, 2011 Asking Dr. K about Leica's future plans is like asking Eisenhower in 1943 when and where the invasion of the continent would occur. Any answer given is washed through marketing, scrutinized for too much (or not enough) information and designed to maximize benefit to the company. "Keep 'em guessing and keep 'em wanting" is a formula for success...

Ecaton Posted June 28, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 28, 2011 The most interestig comment is "the M9 is our Porsche 911". So how is the Leica-Boxster going to look like (it is not the X1)? Porsches history and impressive turnaround in the late 80ies/early 90ies is a good read.
roydonian Posted June 28, 2011 Share #9 Posted June 28, 2011 The interview cites Dr Kaufman as saying: “As for when the second batch of M9-Ps will be shipped.. I think that it will take another 6-weeks.” This seems like an amazingly relaxed way to run a production programme. Not many of us enjoy having six weeks between batches of output. I asked a friend who does high-tech work for a large company how often he is expected to ship batches, and his reply was “weekly”. Best regards, Doug
coz Posted June 28, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 28, 2011 I read once they make 10 at a time so 6 weeks makes sense.
Delfi_r Posted June 28, 2011 Share #11 Posted June 28, 2011 In the meantime the same people has to make M9 bodies, and perhaps it's a 1:3 split between the two models and 15 days supply situation that's not bad for an artisanal production.
sblitz Posted June 28, 2011 Share #12 Posted June 28, 2011 you want hand made or machine stamped product? hand made takes longer. perhaps they should hire more people .... of course hand made does not necessarily mean less issues as the machine goes out the door -- can you tell by the serial number what of the week the camera was manufactured? rosuna Posted July 5, 2011 Share #14 Posted July 5, 2011 It wouldn’t make sense to use the M mount for a new EVIL system. Also I doubt the new system will have anything to do with the M10. The M is 36 x 24 mm while the new system is said to get a sensor of APS-C dimensions at least – APS-C wouldn’t even be an option if this was in any way related to the M10. Fuji will develop a X100 with interchangeable lenses and APS-C format. Fuji's representatives have publicly confirmed it yesterday. And others will come to the new market of mirrorless cameras. Leica has nothing to do there without strong differentiation. I would say strong a sustainable in the long term differentiation. Sometimes marketing people are a nightmare for engineers, but in many occasions engineers may be a nightmare for marketing people (product and price planning) . I see the 24x36 format and the M mount (directly or with a simple adapter) as the two basic requisites for any new Leica camera. The connection with the M10 (or the next classic rangefinder, no matter the name) may be the use of the same electronic components (sensor, processor, motherboard, software). mjh Posted July 5, 2011 Share #15 Posted July 5, 2011 Fuji will develop a X100 with interchangeable lenses and APS-C format. Fuji's representatives have publicly confirmed it yesterday. Have they? All I know is this: Fujifilm aims to be world No. 3 in cameras | Reuters. That doesn’t amount to an announcement; they are just hinting at what they might do. rosuna Posted July 5, 2011 Share #16 Posted July 5, 2011 Sorry, I read it here: Fujifilm confirma su inter The Reuters original source is: Fujifilm aims to be world No. 3 in cameras | Reuters And the exact quote is: "Fujifilm may also re-enter the more lucrative interchangeable lens camera market from which it withdrew in 2004, Takeshi Higuchi, head of the company's camera division, said in an interview with Reuters on Monday". There are more references to this camera ("a mirrorless camera, which has an electronic viewfinder", "Higuchi insisted the company would have no problems developing a mirrorless camera or the required lenses by itself"), etc. This confirms other things I heard before. Fuji is publicly admitting what they were saying in private. It is not an announcement, and yes, they are hinting, but they are on it.

rosuna Posted July 5, 2011 Share #18 Posted July 5, 2011 Sorry but "will" and "may" have very different meanings! Right, but you have to interpret those words in its particular context. A director of a company does not accept to meet with a reporter for spreading rumors or personal opinions or his own belief. The future is unpredictable but they are working on it. rosuna Posted July 6, 2011 Share #19 Posted July 6, 2011 This is an example of ambiguous claim: INTERVIEW-Canon considering compact mirrorless camera | Reuters Canon considering compact mirrorless camera. They are "exploring the possibility". That is pretty obvious. The market is changing and all players are considering the different possibilities. "We are considering the technical aspects," Maeda said, when asked about the mirrorless segment. Technical, not market-related aspects. So, they have started a project.
