Dowloading through M9 USB port problem. Anyone else?

I should start off by saying that I never download using the camera but my sd card reader hasn't arrived yet.

Anyway, here's the problem. When I download through the camera everything freezes after about three seconds of downloading and I have to unplug the camera from my mac. I tried a friends card reader and the card (Ultra II 16gb) downloaded fine. The camera is set to mass storage and I've tried using the macs photo import and also just by clicking and dragging files and neither works... bth freeze up and the status bar doesn't move even after twenty minutes.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for the help.

Erik

I think all Mac users have had this problem, if they have tried to download via USB - there is another thread on this. I was trying yesterday to use my M9 tethered by setting up an http address for it, when attached via its USB cable but the M9 keeps freezing on this as well. I think as far as Mac's are concerned, the USB connection is work in progress or as I suspect, work not in progress. Remember, we were promised an update for Leica Dara Capture over two years ago, when it stopped working after Tiger became Leopard - still waiting. I suggest that you send an email to Leica. If enough of us do this, they or Jenoptic might extract the digit and get some experienced Mac coder in to look at the situation. I have been asking them to sort out Data Capture at regular intervals, ever since it died. I am not sure that Leica recognise that on the last poll we did on the Forum, over 50% were Mac users.

I am having the same issue. For now I connect with mass storage, then go in the drive that pops up in the desktop screen ("no name" in my case). Then I copy the files to my target folder. After that I import from disk and process is the same. I actually think it is faster this way.

Anyways, this is a bug that could be fixed in later firmware I guess.

My career in software has now ended and I'm immensely grateful I never had to deal with Apple's latest and greatest software releases and all the messianic hype which accompanies them.

Say what you like about Windows but Microsoft's compatibility track record is pretty good in my experience and I rarely, if ever, had to update my software to work on new releases of Windows. Before I jumped ship, I tested my software on Windows 7, not a problem.

It's interesting that some here seem to think it's automatically Leica's problem just because some Palo Alto geek has chosen to re-write (say) the Apple USB driver and was too busy squeezing his zits to do the job properly.

My adivce: Get a PC and Windows 7.

Blimey Mark - no compatibility problems with Windows? Vista anyone? Ever wondered why people stick with XP which must be what, 6 or 7 years old now?

We have a full IT support team at work and I am on the committee that oversees the contract.

This has confirmed to me that my choice nearly 20 years ago to have Macs at home and let others support PCs at the office was one of the wisest moves I have ever made. If I had the same aggro with computers at home as I do at work, I wouldn't use a computer at home. I have no idea how "normal people" put up with all the crap.

If you have never used a Mac, then it's a bit difficult to be unbiased about them, I'd have thought. If you have made your fortune by supporting PCs, then it's perfectly reasonable that you should recommend them to people :D

Switched to Macs two years ago for home and have never looked back --- but my office is a Windows XP shop (I'm also on our steering committee) and we have a great IT team. IMHO, for most individuals, and especially those doing things like Photoshop, Macs are easier to manage. But not perfect. (Snow Leopard and printers/scanners is still a work in progress).

Wilson, do you have a person (and address) in mind to email at Leica re Mac support? I'm happy to join such an effort.

Same problem here.

It seems to not worK as a hard drive as well, so I'm not sure what's going on for me.

Should it be set in PTP mode?

---Michael

PTP doesn't work for me (doesn't mount on the desktop.)

I should note that if I drag each file one by one it seems to work about seventy percent of the time. The moment I try to drag three or more it freezes up almost instantly. As I mentioned before though, using a card reader I had no problems. Maybe a snow leopard problem? hmm...

HI Mark

It's not automatically Leica's problem, it just IS Leica's problem (there). I'm sure that it'll be fixed in the next firmware. I'm also quite sure that Leica are aware of it. Apple's USB works fine, and this problem occurs with (at least) several versions of OSx.

Windows 7 seems quite good too (some of us use both)

In the meantime, it's irritating, and the answer is to use a card reader!

What is the betting that if Leica do re-write Data Capture, they will do so in 32 bit and as a live application, it will not run in Snow Leopard, where live applications (where there is an external continuously active device) have now to be written in 64 bit. Having been "under the hood" in Snow Leopard quite a lot over the last few weeks, I have come to the conclusion that virtually all its problems arise from 32/64 bit cocoa/carbon API coding conflicts, many in the USB and Firewire driver areas, where some backwards compatibility has to be incorporated.

I tried PTP, and the camera didn't mount. However, using the program mentiond in the Leica instructions, it seemed to recognize the camera, but it didn't show any images on the memory card. Yanidel, how do you get the camera to mount?

I haven't received my card reader yet, so I can't reliably get my images off the camera, but so far I'm very pleased with the way the camera works, and am looking forward to spending some time learning to use it as my primary shooting tool.

I just set it to PTP in the menu than connect via USB to my Imac. After that, Lightroom will automatically detect it and bring up the import screen.

Yanidel,

Thanks, I'll try that tonight.

Michael,

I presume you have run Image Capture once to configure image loading in your Mac. You do need to do this. After you have run it once, it will then do so in the background unseen, when you next connect a camera.
