M Lens holder and Leica flash bracket adapted to M8

I have always been attached to using the old Leica flash bracket (CTOOM). Also, the Leica M lens holder was something I wished was made for the M8.

Here are my two loved accessories after I had them cut to fit the Leica M8.

John Milich did the work. I gave him my basic needs/wants, and between his expert work/suggestion, and our/my ideas we came up with this:

He also (not shown in a photo) widened the lens holder groove so that the M8 is held in a recess in the lens holder top, like a regular M body is when used with the holder.

This forum has been a wonderful resource for me when I have needed help/advice, and I wanted to share this with Forum members

Wonderful inventiveness!

1. Does the lens holder require an Alan key to screw it to the base of the M8?

2. Is this a dumb question - what are the two screw holes next to the base-plate screw on the flash bracket?

Regards.

Thank you!

It does require an allen key. That is the one thing I want to change, but I need to find a flat 1/ 4 inch attaching screw. The screw needs to be flat.Too high will endanger a rear element. I would like to be able to remove the screw with a dime. I plan to try to file two grooves on the side of the allen hole to see if it can accomodate a dime AND an allen.

I did that with the Linhof Quick Fix attachment plates, that depended on an allen until I filed grooves for a dime.

Hey maybe a Linhof screw will work! the good thing is they are brass so hand filing is possible.

thanks for the idea!

.

The story of the two screw holes;

John first left the holder's original plastic length with the now useless M attaching screw still on. The first hole, if employed, allows the lens to be hanging directly underneath .... in the center. Leica's design. John liked the center hanging idea. I thought off center would be Ok. So the second hole, when the lens holder was turned around, would allow the lens to be held but, off center. Off center would allow the holder to be completely flush on the ends.

Center lens hanging position would have left some 3/4 of an inch of lens holder protruding from one end of the M8 body.

John was right, I felt, the balance was better in the center, so I told him to cut off the extra material.

Sorry I didnt answer your question about the two screws.

They are part of the Leica flash bracket design. Used when mounting the camera with bracket on to a tripod. I think but am not sure ... anyway they were there before any work

Hi,

In order to end with what I have, you would have to buy an M lens holder, which is a current product of Leica, and send it to John Milich for adaptation to the M8..... I guess.

You should contact him, and ask details.

I sold my MP's once I had my M8 so I did not mind butchering the holder to fit the M8. My holder was useless to me, as it only fit M film bodies.

Good luck on figuring out something

Rafael
