I recently acquired this lens and the pictures taken with it on the M8 were very poor. I know that the protruding rear element effects the metering, but any suggestions on how it can be used with the camera and is there any possibility of damaging the shutter while it is mounted to the M8. Thanks for your reply.

I have no experience with this lens, but I know that the users manual specifically does NOT recommend using it on the M8. You may damage your shutter, I would not even mount it on the camera, you are taking a risk..

I have talked to leica and they have informed me that the superangulon 3.4 and f4 including the r version 3.4 with the 22228 adaptor(btw meters great glad i did not sell it) can be used. The rumor that it cannot be used is being spread by those who do not read carefully:

Leica M lenses

• Cannot be used:

Hologon 15mm f/8,

Summicron 50mm f/2 with close focusing.

Elmar 90mm f/4 with collapsible tube (production

period 1954-1968)

• Can be used, but precise composition is not

possible

The LEICA M8 has bright-line frames for focal

lengths up to 90mm (see p. 102). Therefore, when

using longer focal lengths such as the 135mm mod-

els, their image field in the camera viewfinder –

which is very small to start with – can only be

“determined” very imprecisely.

Notes:

• Exposure metering is not possible with:

Super-Angulon-M 21mm f/4

Super-Angulon-M 21mm f/3.4

Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 with serial nos. earlier than

2 314 921.

The lens can be used with the M8, just does not meter correct as it also does not with several Leica M filmcameras as stated above. But .. it does not hurt to be carefull mounting it.

In which aspect do you consider the performance poor ... ?

Because that angulon is and always was a wonderful lens. Besides most older glas performs very good with the M8.

It might be lower contrast and different colors than what you are used too? Could you explain "poor performance" ... assuming you handmeter for accurate exposure?

The Super Angulon hasn't ANY mech problem when mounted on M8, the meter reading is consistently "optimistic" by 2,5 stops or so.

What you mean speaking of "poor" results ? The SA 3,4 is usually a very good lens, and the crop factor of M8 dimishes the vignetting issue, maybe your lens can have saome problem;

Time ago I posted a comparision of my 3 21 (SA f4, SA f3,4, ASPH 2,8) : can be found in the 2nd page of this old thread.

Hi.

I was thinking to buy the Cron 50mm.

Which version should i get?

- Cannot be user:

Summicron 50mm f/2 with close focusing,

What is wrong with it?

Thanks.

Leica note is referred to the special close focus Summicron, also known as "Dual Range" with a deatachable goggles unit for focusing 0,5 to 1 m, a lens of the '60s. The mount is mechanically more complex than the usual one and is not reccomended to use it on M8. But when put in close distance configuration it can work correctly: a number of threads have appeared about this issue, for the close focus Summicron has always been considered a nice lens to have.

But, unless, you are a collector, I'd anyway advice you to find a standard Summicron and a more recent one.
