telyt 400 on viso

Recommended Posts

Hum, I am one who surely has some experience about Telyt 400s...I own three... which one do you refer to ? There are

1) The very first 40 cm f5 pre-and-postwar, 5 elements, HEAVY, cone-shaped

2) The f5 2nd version, 4 elements, a little lighter (I haven't it... yet)

3) The f 5,6 long focus 2 elements with "Televit" focus unit with pistol grip

4) The f 6,8 long focus 2 elements with shoulder stock, pistol grip and "trombone" focusing

3) and 4) have a similar 560 version that shares same components of the assembly.

As I said, I used 1-3-4 : 1) is definitely TOO heavy (2,4 Kg) a glass/iron block: Viso+lens+camera+tripod (mandatory) is a fascinating and terrible to carry assembly. The lens (my one is postwar, COATED) is much better than one can think, considering is a 1936 design...focusing is difficult for there is a classical helicoid, heavy to rotate with precision.

3) and 4) for are the "modern" and "usable" models: they are rather light, exp. 6,8, and not impossible to be used freehand, provided that one is accustomed to use the VIsoflex (with prism, of course) . In terms of quality, they have a typical behavior due to their 2-elements optic: chrome abherration is well corrected, spherical abherration is NOT corrected; at "large" apertures (5,6 or 6,8 to 11) center image is sharp, corners aren't, simply: they are good for sport or wildlife, with subject at center, not so much for landscapes, unless you use a tripod and close with decision to 22 or even 32 using the time you need: I have always observed that these lenses simply do better on corners the more you close, there is no degradation at full close (this is not strange for such lenghts). And they are nice devices... this comes from the heart of a colector...

You can find a shot I made with a Telyt 40cm, F/5 (at F/8) and M8 + Visoflex III in LFI 5/2007 (June/July) on page 29.

I share Luigis experience. Although this lens is really big, it´s not very heavy, more air than glass ;-) I recommend a tri- or monopod.

Hi Harold... and. keep in mind :) I AM NOT THE LUIGI OF "LUIGI CASE" : I am simply an amateur / collector of Leica items... no business about ("Luigi of the Cases" is Lugi Crescenzi of Rome, well known, historical Leica dealer in Rome)

Your lens is Postwar - '50 or '51 , so surely coated - good thing: enjoy it ! Have a 135 in mind ? simple and quick advice :

- Love chrome ? : Elmar f 4

- No matter finishing, want it's really good ?: a fine Tele Elmar f4

Both easy to find, beware of scratches.

Bye

Luigi -not the one of the cases :)

Luig,hi, thanks for the info. i'm really getting into this "Leica thing since i got these m8s. i feel like a tourist, even though my first was a IIIf in the early 50s and my last was a double stroke m3 around 1970. recently gave up my 4x5 and wet darkroom and went digatal kicking and screeming. by the way the best part of a luigi case is the snap flap that covers up that window on the back. now I dont have to peel the masking tape of f to change the asa. also i dont care who the hell you said who you were or werent, you still make a hell of a case, Hal Michaels

HAROLD,

$1.500 sounds a bit much. A similar lens can be found at german Leica dealers for less than Euro 650,- (private for about Euro 450,-), a Viso III in very good condition for about 180,- Euro or less (a total of US$900,- is not impossible).

The 400/5 can range from 300 to 1000 euro.

but recently (and I bought it for the glass) i paid 500 for one from Igor. I also have a mint for 900.

If you look at my response in the LTM thread you can see how good these lenses are; I show a very respectable 39 MP shot!

(contax 645 with P45)

I also have both the 6.8 and 5.6 but they are slower and althoiugh the 6.8 is sharper, I do not know if it has the image circle (6x6 !!) of the LTM 400/5

Someone seems to think it will cover 6x4.5:

the 280mm f/4.8 will also cover 6x6.

Dear Doug

Yes, I have seen in this mount. Must be.

Certainly worth a try if I can find someone to make the adapter.Actually need to use an M viso froma Viso II (it doesnt have the fat flange of the Viso III) and a contax mount from an adapter.

Using the 400 6.8 on a MF with a back could be a real interesting arrangement for wildlife (it actually gets focus confirmation on the Contax 645 the way the focus works in the body.)

regards

I'm a little surprised about this question of 6,8 covering MF... given that, expecially at 6,8 -8 the corners are so-so on 24x36... But as I said, it is a lot better stopping down... less surprised of 280 and 400 f5... also the telyt 200 f 4 covers 6x6... Lager display his 200 on a Hasselblad 1600F...

Here on M8 with a Viso 1.

It's a great (and mint) lens from 1961.

The only regret is, they didn't had invented the apochromatism then. ;)

Yea, Philippe, what a fine combo !!! Is it original also the double cable release ? Wouldn't that I have some other priorities for my M8 (75 mm :) ) I'd be really tempted to complete my little 400s collection... And I already have a Viso I... but my 45° prism, same as the one you have, is a little "dirty" inside...:o

And... did you find a UV IR filter for your 400 ? ;)
