When I stopped by the library at the International Center of Photography last week, I obtained a list of 100 photography books, complied by the library staff and instructors at the ICP.

If you are interested in the list, I have posted at:

PGR: Best Photography Books

Is it the "100 BEST"?

victor,

I love your site. However, under contemporary photographers, I think you mean burtynsky and not "burtytsky". Cheers!

Great list, very interesting. This sort of thing is always delightfully arguable. In the field of photo books I would add Tete a Tete by HC-B, Requiem by American photographers in Vietnam, Photo Nomad by David Douglas Duncan, Faces by Bown. In the field of photography history there is an excellent biography of HC-B out now. Somebody wrote a good history of the Magnum photo agency about 5 years ago, don't know the title at this moment.

willian.. ya sure it is burtinsky.. hahha.. is this the onlyy mistake you found ?? hahahha will make a serious revision of all the stuff later on with english literature proffesor who always revises my works (writen) ...

ian.. deffenetly usa-oriented.. but im not sure how seriously those things can be taken beyound something introductory...

ah.. good that you reminded them to me.. salgado and parr.. gonna add them on my site too.. there will be text only about part of the phoptographers from the list (those that i love especially and influenced or concider as very important in history of foto)...

think we can take salgado to the calssics - rite ? actually eggleston too - classics by all means, to be honest... but i thought of him as more a kind of milstone.. that is why he is on the conteporary side on my list...

I was given "The best of Popular Photography" 40th anniversary edition (1937-1977).

This might not belong on a "Top 100" but its great reference for improving photography.

It has articles from various greats in American Photography, and various simply-presented discussions of lighting, art, history, and technology.

As a technophile, I really like the discussions on equipment and why certain cameras were chosen.

I'm not so much of a chemist, so the articles on development kinda go over my head.

The old camera ads are cool too
