Your favorite Leica screw mount lens.

Recommended Posts

;) ;) ;) ...you catch the right guy asking me my "favorite" (and not the "best to me")....

f.... off all tech discussions, sharpness, MTR graphs !!! Let the TRUTH triumph !! and the truth is that a number of Leica SM lenses are damn nice !!! Better than a Bauhaus drawing, better than an Art Deco glass!!! My ABSOLUTE dearest :

A) Elmar 10,5cm f 6,3 : gentler than a flower...

B) Summarex 8,5 cm f 1,5 : luxury more than a steel Rolex...

C) Hektor 7,3cm f 1,9 : mysterious more than a black dahlia ...

2nd choice Summarit 1,5 Summaron 28 Elmar 90 (chrome+vulkan A 36)

A special taste : Telyt 40 cm f 5 1st version ("big cone"): sounder than a brass trombone !

Geee... is this becoming a prize-win quiz-contest ? I want TV coverage !

As for the question... push my button and dare to answer Summilux 50. Of course not absolutely the last lens designed ORIGINALLY for SM only: from the introduction of M3 in the '50s, all the lenses were designed for both mounts...I think the last "designed for SM" can be the Summaron 28 f5,6 (*)

Judges: give your sentence ! I can be content by a modest prize of a pair of some new ASPHs....

(*) not considering the "bastards" BM that were SM designs with "embedded" adapters (35s, 90s, 21...)

Hi Luigi,

Mine are 1960's

Are you going to Castel San Giovanni on Sunday 15th ?

Cheers

JC

I would like to be there, but difficult, even if it is 1 hour from home... it's springtime... for ski-mountaineers, the right timeframe for trips in the range over 3000..wheather looks good... this week end Monte Rosa is planned... anyway with M4, you bet.

50mm Rigid Summicron. One of the best lenses ever made. The late lamented Modern Photography thought so too. I also have the 35mm 8 element Summicron but based on my experience with it, I don't think it's as good as the 50mm.

My favourite SM Leica lens? Well, I'd have to say it's the red scale Elmar 3.5/5cm. Still one hell of a lens, and so Leicaish. Probably THE Leica lens of all ages.

Yes, I agree. But uncoated.

Oh yes, it exists in screw mount...dream of collectors...577 made...and a few BLACK...ultra rare... but, Robert, it cannot be of 1966, I think: 8 elements Summicron 35 have been made in 58-63, I seem: I have one but is BM, pity... but from Wetzlar (most from Canada)

You're quite right - mine is a silver Midland one from 1963, not 1966 !! :o

Hi Robert,

ps. If anyone happens to know the correct filter size for this lens, (E39 is loose and doesen't match the threads)
The E39 is the correct filter size for this lens.

Must be a problem with either the filter thread on lens or on the filter. :(

Hey Robert, don't joke about this question of the filter..., you've posted

something like a small bomb for a collector/historician... let's recap:

- You do have a Summicron 35f2, Canada, SM, chrome

- What is its s/n ? I suppose in the range 1,6 - 1,9 million

- Is it a "regular" SM, i.e., focus to 1m/3'4" ?

- You say that E39 filters DO NOT FIT its filter thread

It MUST have E39 filter thread ! All the "holy bibles" say this clearly !

IF really not so... ah, an excellent news for historicians, due for

publishing, for investigating about... some insights:

- Summicron 35 with NO filter thread are known in BM (Lager)

- You say that yours HAS thread and 39 is loose: what is its diameter?

- If it is 41, strange speculations can be made about the fact

that Ernst Leitz Canada made also (but only until 1960) the only lens

with E41 thread: Summarit 50 1,5; Summarit and Summicron 35 were the

first lenses manufactured in Ontario... but I seem that yours is not

to be dated 1960 or before...oh oh what a mistery...

Some advices :

- Control again with care the thread diameter: if really definitely not 39:

- Make a number of well done pictures

- Send them to LHSA or to James Lager

- Keep the lens in a safe place

- Do not make public your home address in this forum !

I wait with anxiety news from you...
