Fontenelle archives 77 : Did you know the Telyt Old Delft 40 cm, code TDLCA ?

In 1959, the Leitz catalogue for Belgium listed (page 18) a "Telyt Oude Delft 500mm. Téléobjectif à miroir, reflex inclus (Pour montage direct sur boîtier) TDLCA". Translation : Mirror tele-lens, built-in reflex (For direct camera body mount). And in the price list, the TDLCA was priced at BEF 19,200 (euros 3,360 at today's equivalent), with the TLCOO (Telyt 40 cm) at BEF 18,872 (euros 3,300).

After investigating at Wetzlar, we discovered that this "Telyt" had been marketed only in Belgium and the Netherlands, had been delivered as from 1960...and had a 40 cm focal length, not 500 mm as erroneously quoted in the Belgian catalogue, the 1:5 aperture having created the "confusion" !

We immediately started the quest, alerting all second-hand dealers we knew. Within two months, we had one of these wonders in our Fontenelle Collection.

As a matter of fact, the Oude Delft Fototel 1:5/40 cm has never been directly linked to Leitz by any kind of engraving. It was just delivered with an adapter allowing its direct mount on a Leica. Its only advantages against the Telyt, were its weight and its direct mount (no Visoflex or TZFOO/SQTOO needed).

Ours came in its nice original leather "two-stories" bag. The normally opening upper part contained the (bulky) lens. The viewer, adapter ring and a set of three filters were nicely arranged in a lower part with front opening. By the way, the filters had to be put in the adapter ring.

Here are the photos.

First, two photos of the case :

The complete equipment with the viewer (periscope) and 3 filters in the foreground, the lens, adapter and filter adapter on the second row :

Four photos of the "thing". First (in B/W) mounted on a IIIg and a tripod, the second view detailing the "attachment" to the camera. Next in colour on a Ig :

And finally, copies of the 1959 catalogue with the mentions quoted above. Incidentally, look at the SYOOM (Leicavit) price : about today's euros 250 !!!

But... indeed there had been an Oude Delft 50cm (f 6,3) .. I know of it by chance, just for one item is to be auctioned end of May by Westlicht :

... I was even vaguely tempted to make an offer for it.... never had a mirror lens and these Mirotars ( https://www.westlicht-auction.com/index.php?id=215778&acat=215778&offset=2&_ssl=off) would fit fine my Contarex set, but have both a little issue... expecially the 1000... :D

Right, Luigi : there has been a 500 mm Oude Delft, but it is a 1:6.3. The only one with a 1:5 aperture was the 40 cm.

  • 3 months later...

According to this Oude Delft 40cm lens FOTO TEL | Flickr - Photo Sharing! the lens dates from 1948 and an Exacta mount example was sold by Westlicht in December '10 , Lot number 616. I have seen a LTM example newly listed by a well known London dealer today complete with case and accessories Home
