Fontenelle archives 56 : actuating the diaphragm...

Adjusting the aperture diaphragm of the "old" 5cm Elmar without touching the front lens requires some care. But when the Elmar is "hooded", it is a nightmare and a significant waste of time. Leitz has - of course - provided a solution with its small VOOLA ring. When the Elmar is used - inverted! - on an enlarger or a copying stage (sliding or rotating), the problem is worse, and the Leitz solutions a little more sophisticated : VALAU or VALOO hoods/rings.

And finally, at least for the first case when the Elmar is "hooded" and mounted on a Leica, somebody (is it Leitz?) had the brilliant idea of "intergrating" the FISON-VOOLA assembly, in simply riveting an actuating "fork" inside the FISON.

Interesting the last... but I think it's not a Leitz-made modification... a bit rough-looking, indeed... and you haven't an external ref to the stop you set rotating the hood...:o: btw. do you have to rotate the whole hood body, releasing the clamping screw, or has been the FISON modified to allow indipendent rotation of the cylindrical front part ? It can be... but not so clear looking at the picture.

Luigi,

Even the VOOLA / FISON combination required rotation of the whole asembly to change the f-stop. And - the only way to find out which f-stop was set, was to peek inside the hood.

The best solution to the problematic f-stop setting if one wished to use a hood on the 50mm Elmar was the VALOO hood / ring, which was originally designed for darkroom use.... In many Leitz catalogues it was listed as an accessory for the Valoy enlarger and could not be found among regular lens hoods .

Best,

Jan

doubice has given the right answer, Luigi. I will just add that the VALOO was indeed designed for use on enlargers - and marketed accordingly - but was immediately used as lens hood by numerous Leica enthusiasts, and also used as diaphragm setting ring when the lens was mounted upside-down on sliding or rotating focusing stages (OOZAB, OORES etc..).
