Hi all,

 

Sorry it this has been previously asked, but I couldn't find any post about this

I have been after this for some time now, but it is now that I just got a "brand new" Standard Black, and would like to know how this works. For starters, I can't find the ON button, or the screen in the back!!!

I understand that the film leader has to be modified in order to load it (there was somewhere a template to guide how to cut it?), but other than little piece of information, I don't know how to make this work. Is there any kind soul with a pdf instruction book in english? (perhaps that's too much to ask!)

I am used to regular M cameras, so it shouldn't be THAT hard to make this baby work!!

Does the speed need to be set before advancing the film? any special instructions?

You'll find instructions here: Leica camera instruction manuals, leicaflex camera instruction manual. All screw-mount Leicas work the same way apart from details such as rangefinder focusing and the range of shutter speeds (and barring a few prototypes and special models).

 

Screw-mount Leicas need a much longer "tongue" on the film than is provided on today's cassettes. No need for a template, careful work with sharp scissors is all you need. Here's a picture posted in this forum a while back. The exact shape doesn't matter (except that there must be a smooth curve where the tongue reaches the full width of the film) but the length does.

 

 

Set the shutter speed after winding.

 

And if you mean to use the camera seriously, get a lens hood (36 mm clamp-on, "A36"). The best is the telescoping one codenamed FIKUS.

some one set the speed o Z to leave the blind open so you can see that the film is in place.

Just to add, trimming the film leader doesn't have to be 'exact', just make sure that you have enough leader so that it extends from the film cannister to the take up spool, i.e. the full width of the film will only cross the sprockets after you have loaded the film and wound on.

 

I generally cut mine more than 40mm long, just by guesstimate.

Thanks James, it looks great indeed, that's why it took me so long to get one, I wanted a good looking one :-)

Just make sure that,when trimming the leader,you don't cut through a perforation.If you do,you could tear off a chunk of film when winding on,which could then become lodged in the mechanism.For myself,I use an ABLON template to trim the leader for all my screw mount cameras.Use whatever method works best for you.

In my experience it doesn't matter if you cut through a performation providedyou leave a smoothly rounded curve as shown in the diagrams. Trouble comes when you cut through a perforation and leave a jagged edge which can get caught up and torn.

 

The ABLON template isn't necessary but it makes things easier.

You should see the instructions how and how long to cut the film on the inner side of the bottom plate (if not your bottom plate may not be the original one ). The ABLON is nice to have but rare - so you can guess that most original users of a screwmount Leica didn't use one - and it worked.

 

Before you can set the shutter speed you have to rewind the filmknob -otherwise the speed dial isn't in the right position. .
