Unless I'm missing something obvious it looks like the 'free' Leica special of Silver Efex doesn't qualify for the free upgrade to the collection. Still, at $149 for the whole collection it is a good deal.

It was early December when I downloaded & activated my free Leica copy of SFX.

I just rec'd this in my e-mail from Google/Nik:

Thanks for being a long-time Nik customer. As a registered owner of one or more of our software products, we are pleased to announce that you are now eligible for a free copy of the new Nik Collection by Google, which includes all six of our award-winning plug-ins for Photoshop, Lightroom, or Aperture.

I'm Currently installing all the rest of the plug-ins.

Free is good!

This is great news even though I already have Silver Efex Pro and Viveza, I get all the others free! I tipped off a friend earlier and he got the package immediately. There was a small SNAFU repeated in Internet chatter that the downloaded file would not open in Windows. The answer was to rename the file extension .EXE but it may have been corrected by now.

Thanks for that – I've just checked my spam folder and I have the same email as well. (A little ironic that an email from Google/Nik would be treated as spam by Gmail:D.)

Is the week-long roll-out of mails to existing customers intended to spread the server load? I'm a registered owner of a couple of these products, and it feels strange that they announce this sort of thing before informing their existing customers?

Got my e-mail today and downloaded the complete suite for free (I had previously downloaded Silver Efex 1 also for free)

(LR4 plug-in version on Mac).

Beautiful. :)

+1 : Feeling very lucky, and very grateful to Steve Unsworth, who I recall posted the link here whence I got my freebie SFX1

Steve, most grateful too.

(Thanks Jim, couldn't recall from whom I got the tip on this forum.)

Still waiting for my email...

Now I think they could've done it like this: sent a mail to every registered owner saying that, at some time over the week in order to spread server load, they'd be receiving their freebie link.

The way it is now, I'm seeing people on other forums offering to share the free links in private messages, and as a registered customer I'm not even sure if I'll ever get that mail from Nik. This may be irrational but it's pissing me off. I also suspect Google are killing development of the whole range of products - which would be a shame.

How much of a server load is it to send out some emails to every registered user, at the same time?

It's not like every Apple customer getting an email within an hour.

No I meant all the simultaneous downloads that would follow.

But regardless, this sort of random mailing is totally annoying - especially when the free links are being shared before registered owners have got their mails. To me it just feels like typical google abandonware already - can't help but get the feeling that they don't really care who gets the free links - registered or not.

I have two observations about the Nik suite.

First, I have been experimenting with Sharpener Pro 3.0 during the last several weeks. I find it much easier to see the results in Sharpener Pro's window than I do in Photoshop's. I highly recommend the following training video for anyone who wants to understand Sharpener Pro's workflow. It is about 1.5 hours, it is not perfect, but it really helped me understand the controls and options. The video also mentions Leica cameras, which was interesting. Webinars In short, while Silver Efex and Color Efex are obvious Nik choices, don't ignore Sharpener Pro until you at least give it a try.

Second, my project this past winter has been to learn Photoshop. I had success. My workflow has gone from Lightroom focused to Photoshop, Bridge, and ACR. I have one observation about Nik software in terms of workflow. Some if not all of the Nik programs can be used in Photoshop as smart filters, which means that you can go back to a photograph that you edited in Silver Efex Pro and make further adjustments without having to start over. That was always a problem for me in Lightroom: Once you save the Silver Efex edited photo, you are stuck with it. If you are serious about adding Silver Efex to your workflow, I think a Photoshop workflow has a significant advantage over Lightroom workflow, at least if you are using Nik software. Of course, there is no one right workflow.
