Quite a lot has been written & discussed about the D-Lux 4 Viewfinder. Just want to get a consensus of what members are using (Leica D-Lux 4 Viewfinder or one made by someone else). And why did you make that choice? Are you content with that choice or are you looking for another solution? Could clear up lots of other posts & searches!!

the original Leica M 24mm viewfinder, since november.

I bought it second hand, since the D-lux finder was not available.

It works very well, but it's a little large.

Since it is a little larger than die D-Lux finder,

the flash cannot pop up.

For the rest it's great and I use it all the time.

I ( or rather my wife) used the CV 25 mm one, but it is a bit large blocking the flash so I took advantage of the plight of the pound and got the dedicated one. Which is an excellent viewfinder btw.

Ordered the Panasonic one about a week ago, would like to see how the frame lines match up.

I have compared both the Panasonic and the Leica. The Leica is much better and the frame lines are matching up. The Panasonic does not match up...

I use a zeiss 21mm which I already had. strangely when I look in it its almost a perfect match, for the actual 24mm shot. not sure why.

The Leica finder is probably better, I did play with it at PMA yesterday and yes it does allow for the flash to pop up.

Someone else has found pretty much the same effect with the Voigtlander 21mm finder here : Micah Walter - Photojournalist, Writer and Consultant

I'll be buying the Voigtlander V21B myself soon, even though it won't let the flash unit up

Just got a Voigtlander 28/35 finder with the intent of using tighter frames. What I didn't know (ordered this and the camera nearly simultaneously) is that the DLUX doesn't display the focal length. I had hoped to set the camera on 28 or 35 and use the finder accordingly. I'm trying to train myself with trial and error to get some use of these framelines. Not entirely optimal, but the finder is splendidly compact, bright, and sturdy (metal). Anyone else doing this?

I found the results of somebody's experiment, viz. using EXIF data and a series of pictures taken at different zoom extensions which compared the location of the white zoom indicator bar to the: "1.64ft - 00(inf)" shown in the LCD while zooming. I used "P" mode and the digital zoom was turned off.
Here are the results. If you set the white bar all the way to the left you (obviously) get 24mm. Under the "1" = 26mm. Under the "." = 28mm. Under the "6" = 32mm. Under the "4" = 37mm. Under the "f" = 41mm. Under the "t" 44mm. Under the "first empty space" = 48mm. Under the "hyphen" = 52mm. Under (actually a little to the left of) the "left infinity loop" = 57mm. And finally all the way to the right (again obviously) 60mm.

I bought my Digilux-4 yesterday.

From my scrap yard I have reanimated a Canon viewfinder (28 mm). It fits with the builtin flashunit. The thing is 40 years old now, it was a good buy.

My first impression of the Digilux-4 is positive. In my opinion the camera is worth the price. My hands could be somewhat smaller (?!).

Hello,

I just noticed a Leica finder on eBay for the D Lux 4. It mentions an LED display. Could someone with this finder please explain to me the role of the LEDs or is it just an "eBay thing". As always, I appreciate the input from forum members. Thanks.

There is no LED. This verbiage was present in Leica's original announcements, and was on their product website. It caused significant confusion to many of us who assumed (correctly) that it's merely a brightline viewfinder. Leica has since updated their description of the finder (see here: Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA D-LUX 4 Brilliant Viewfinder ), but people selling the product who took the description straight from Leica several months ago (whether eBay sellers or other retailers) are likely using the outdated and inaccurate description.

Jeff.
