Riley Posted July 16, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is 'Leica quality' its a Sony sensor in D2 and the fault is recognised in dozens of cameras by many manufacturers even those made by panasonic, who unlike Leica only recently supported replacement and canon, who had to be dragged to court kicking via a class action to fix the same faults

You have not only a Leica by putting its name on it! Like a Leica!
Speenth Posted July 16, 2007 Share #9 Posted July 16, 2007 Sad, but then, it is a Leica. I had my new M8 for just a month when it broke. It's been at Leica for a month since - no sign of its return yet (I know, I should've insisted on a replacement, fool that I am). It doesn't say much for that "Made in Germany" boast of engineering excellence (and to my experience so far, customer service is poor indeed - when it went wrong I was offered but one option - back to the factory). I've had my Pentax Spotmatic for 40 years and its never missed a beat. My Canon EOS is 15 years old and works just fine and my little Casio Exilim is three years old and is as reliable as a Swiss watch (well maybe not - my very expensive Omega is bust, whereas my 20 year old Seiko divers watch has been everywhere and at every depth and keeps perfect time still). I know, there is something about a Leica and I do feel that too, but that feeling is fading by the passing days that I go without my M8 .....

I realise Leica is a little, struggling cottage crafts company - but I do hope they're taking note of out pleas for just a bit of an improvement in: a) quality control and; customer care. The latter being the more important in the longer term.

jaapv Posted July 16, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted July 16, 2007 It is 'Leica quality' It is a souped up Panasonic in my book, and one of the most satisfying integrated cameras ever made. I used it for about 10.000 shots before it died and happily it will live again - thanks to leica not Panasonic, who still are being difficult about this problem. I'm happy I bought the Leica version. leicapfile Posted July 19, 2007 Share #15 Posted July 19, 2007 I'm just a curious guy with a late (serial 3,013,608) D2, that has happily hummed along for two + years and 3,000+ exposures. Is anyone aware of any corelations between either early production vs. late production of the D2 and number of exposures affecting the sensor failure? TIA, Jerry
Annie135 Posted July 19, 2007 Share #16 Posted July 19, 2007 Mine is an early D2, Ser No 2991221. I had owned it from new and after three years less a few days of enjoying it and only just over one thousand exposures it died. Good news is it is now back. Brian. jaapv Posted July 19, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted July 19, 2007 The worst thing: We just got two puppies last Sunday, and instead of Patricia taking the D2 and snapping away, I am dragged from whatever I am doing and am told : "They are cute! Take a photograph!" The results are not fit for publication...

However I'm now very curious for the results, especially when you write ".. not fit for publication"
marknorton Posted July 19, 2007 Share #19 Posted July 19, 2007 Sounds like mine is living on borrowed time, especially since it was Anatomised last year. Coming back to it after the M8, I do like the option to show the centre of the image magnified as the first stage of the image review. I know the focus point isn't always there but when it is... Still a keeper for me, even though it's a bit sluggish. Unlike the R-D1 which just seems past it now.
jaapv Posted July 20, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted July 20, 2007 Just got the Serviceauftrag. Maybe ithe CCD itself is not the cause. The notwendige Arbeit is "CCD instandsetzen", but the needed material is "CCD Leiterband". That suggests a connector went. Whichever way, it is full extended guarantee
