MacSpikes Posted September 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The chip on my DMR died. It was my favorite camera for wildlife photography. Suddenly the images had weird lines and became monochrome. I had it sent back to Leica, but it cannot be repaired according to them. With all my lovely Leica R-glass, I would like to look for an alternative. As I see it I can do the following: - Get a Canon 5D with adapter - Get a Nikon D with Leitax rings (I used to work with this) - Get a Sony NEX-5N with adapter - Wait for the Leica Evil a Photokina 2012 (if ever) What are your opinions on this? I presume Leica is correct in stating my DMR cannot be repaired. Oh horror!
Advertisement Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Hi MacSpikes, Take a look here My DMR died :-(. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Overgaard Posted September 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2011 Or get another DMR? I wonder if Leica may get spare parts from other unites over time. It should be a possibility, so perhaps ask if there is hope to get on a waiting list. I don't have any interest in this one, but 4,600$ for camera, DMR and lens. Not bad compared with getting a Nikon and having refitting done. Tyranoquake Posted September 14, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 14, 2011 Feel sorry about your DMR...I think leica statement is the best answer that leica can give it to you, because the sensor and electronics company which is "Imacon imaging" if I correct.. Is been acquisition or bought by another company... So.. There is no more parts and technician that can handle the DMR... Your option for 5d mkii quite ok.. But, keep mind that is not a leica, in fact, mkiii is going out within a year.. If you can afford, switch system to S (i can't ) or switch to M perhaps? That's my opinion... Guest Posted September 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 14, 2011 ... wildlife photography.... with M ??Most wild animals won't wait for a visoflex and up to 90 or 135mm the lions won't get hungry anymore.... Try to get a secondhand dmr, good luck!

Tyranoquake Posted September 14, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 14, 2011 with M ??Most wild animals won't wait for a visoflex and up to 90 or 135mm the lions won't get hungry anymore.... Try to get a secondhand dmr, good luck! Hehehehee... Sure.. M is not for wildlife.. R is okay.. But the problem is the DMR itself.. Year ago i have r8, almost buy the DMR, but friend of mine said that DMR won't last long like M8 and so on, because the company itself is not operational anymore... Just like buy cheap pocket camera, if you break it, you throw it..nobody wants to repair it... Last option, 5d mkii with r adaptor, or S system
jpattison Posted September 14, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) That may be so, but after seeing what a DMR produces, you will be looking for another one! John
Rona!d Posted September 14, 2011 Share #8 Posted September 14, 2011 A Canon 5D II or Nikon is no replacement for a DMR which offers a much better image quality. The S-System could be an option, but would be expensive. Try to get another DMR on the used market!
MacSpikes Posted September 15, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted September 15, 2011 I have the M9 with some lenses and that is no option for wildlife unfortunately. My best bet would be to get another DMR without any doubt. Too bad it is beyond repair....
MacSpikes Posted September 23, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted September 23, 2011 Thanks Thorsten! I got that DMR you pointed at. I just could not get myself to buy a Nikon or Canon after the great results I had with the DMR.
harrisfoto Posted September 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted September 24, 2011 I love my DMR for studio work. I has the Kodak sensors, same as Hasselblad. Those give a totally different image than the Cankon. Kodak is about to go out of business. So, you may want to get a second, used DMR, and save your investment in the lenses.
