Digilux 2 Rubber starting to come loose

Around two years ago when I first bought my Digiulux 2 I had read of incidences on the old forum of the rubber grip starting to come off.

Time went by and I began to think I had avoided this problem.

However, today, thanks to the very hot weather here in the UK well hotter than we usually seem to get and and an extended indoor shooting session in which the camera became quite warm I detected that he rubber was starting to lift on the right hand side of the camera.

I managed to keep it pressed down and after shooting was concluded hit on the idea of cooling things down by pressing a cold mineral water bottle against the rubber, which appears to have done the trick and forced the rubber back into place almost. Its certainly better than it was.

However, tomorrow, I face another longish shooting session in doors and imagine the problem will reoccur and get worse!

Those people who have experienced this problem - what is the best solution - return it to Leica and ask for a warrenty repair (how long ?) or attempt a fix ones self (recommend which glue).

Suggestions please!

Thanks

John

Peeling off on a hot day....

There was a thread on this a while ago, but it is worth asking again - what have people used that has worked to glue it back?

And by the way, what should we avoid trying?

2-year warranty. It's worth doing -- I had mine done by Leica USA while I waited, and at the same time they installed new firmware (mine is a VERY early D2) that is reputed to improve autofocus performance. This was only necessary for every early D2s -- the rest have it from the factory.

The main reason you need to be careful is that the solvent used in many glues, for example contact adhesives like "evo-stik" (well known in the UK) will happily strip off, or at least etch into, the paint covering the top and bottom panels. You can do it, but the secret is to remove the rubber without stretching it, remove the existing glue and the re-stick it using a thin even coat of glue on each surface which you have left to go really tacky so that when you press the items together, excess glue does not ooze out of the sides and spoil your day.

I also had my Digilux 2 recovered in black osterich leather.

John,

My 2 years old Digilux 2 showed same problem: the rubber grip started to get loose and on top of it I had autofocus problems. I had the camera replaced and following the recommendation of my dealer, I covered the camera's ruber and metal parts with a tape called gaffer from Permacel This tape has been specially developped for the photo/film industry and leaves no traces when removed. It protects the camera again skretches, dust etc . I have the same gaffer since 6 months. the tape gives the look of an old camera. I even covered the brand name to keep curious away. Now I don t remove gaffer anymore only before selling the camera if ever.
